Distance Test / Return Path

■ ■ Chapter 5: Distance Test / Return Path
He had decided it from the beginning.
He wouldn’t go.
There was no clear reason.
Only—
a sense
that it would be better that way.
No.
That wasn’t right.
It wasn’t about “better.”
He needed to know.
What would remain
without that place—
that space—
that coincidence.
Would it still hold?
Or would it unravel
with ease?
Akira walked past the café.
For a brief moment,
his steps nearly stopped.
—chime.
A sound that should not have been there
rose somewhere inside him.
The door hadn’t opened.
And yet—
it felt like he heard it.
He looked away.
Kept walking.
His shoes pressed
against the damp pavement.
The rain from yesterday
still lingered.
—shff.
A soft sound—
water shifting under sole.
And with that alone—
the air of yesterday
almost returned.
He stopped himself.
Not today.
He had already decided.
He kept walking.
The flow of people
toward the station surrounded him.
A steady pace.
No one stopped.
And yet—
for a brief instant,
his stride shifted.
As if—
there should have been
someone beside him.
A space,
slightly open.
He left it that way.
Work passed without notice.
Nothing unusual.
The sound of typing.
—tap, tap, tap.
A steady rhythm.
The glow of the screen
held his attention—
but not completely.
His fingers paused.
He wasn’t trying to remember.
Just—
something was missing.
He stood
and went for coffee.
In front of a vending machine,
he looked at the buttons.
Black.
Latte.
A brief hesitation.
He pressed latte.
—thunk.
The can dropped.
He picked it up.
Warm.
But—
that was all.
It wasn’t the same.
The metal held
a uniform heat.
The café cup—
hadn’t.
It had carried
a small space within it—
as if air
was mixed into the warmth.
He drank.
Sweet.
And nothing more.
It passed through him.
Left no trace.
And with that—
it was clear.
It wasn’t the taste.
Not the place.
It was—
who he was drinking with.
That alone
had made it what it was.
He exhaled.
Slightly surprised
that he had understood it.
Evening came.
The sky remained cloudy.
Not heavy—
but still unsettled.
A light wind moved through.
Carrying a trace
of dampness.
He wondered
where he should go.
There was nowhere
he wanted to be.
And yet—
his feet
chose a direction
on their own.
Before he realized—
he was standing
on that street.
He stopped
just before the café.
He hadn’t planned to go in.
He had decided
not to.
And still—
his eyes fixed
on the door.
—chime.
Again.
A sound that wasn’t there.
He could leave.
He didn’t move.
Then—
A sound from behind.
—tap.
—tap.
Light footsteps,
quickened slightly.
A presence
drawing near.
He knew before turning.
“...You’re here after all.”
Azusa.
Her breathing
slightly uneven.
Perhaps she had run.
“…You too,” he said.
She smiled faintly,
catching her breath.
“I wasn’t going to come.”
The same.
Not exactly.
But—
the result was.
They both smiled,
just a little.
A quiet, short laugh.
Then—
silence.
There was no need
to look for words.
They stood side by side.
In front of the door.
“Going in?” she asked.
He paused, briefly.
Why he had come.
Why he had stayed away.
All of it
felt like it had lost its meaning.
“…Either way.”
She exhaled lightly.
“Then maybe… we don’t.”
She didn’t reach for the door.
Instead,
she began to walk.
He followed.
At first,
their steps didn’t align.
Then—
within a few strides,
they drew closer.
Not perfectly.
But without discomfort.
They turned a corner.
The wind passed through.
Their arms
moved slightly nearer.
Not touching.
But not distant.
They walked—
without deciding where to go.
And didn’t stop.
After a while,
she spoke softly.
“Hey.”
“Yes?”
“This might be enough.”
“…This?”
She smiled slightly.
“We don’t have to keep going
back to the same place…”
A small pause.
“…if we end up there anyway.”
He narrowed his eyes, just a little.
It was true.
They weren’t choosing it.
And yet—
they arrived
at the same place.
“…Yes,” he said.
He nodded slowly.
“If it becomes the same
without choosing it…”
He took a step.
“…then maybe
that’s enough.”
She said nothing.
But adjusted her pace
just slightly.
That alone
was an answer.
The sky was still heavy.
But the rain had stopped.
Through a break in the clouds,
a faint light emerged.
They walked beneath it.
Not the same—
but not apart.
And that distance—
had already become natural.
And it no longer carried
any sign
of disappearing.
