Rain Between Us

■ ■ Chapter 4: Rain Between Us
The metal handle felt damp
when he pushed the door.
Not cold—
but layered
with a thin film of moisture
that lingered on his fingertips.
The air had changed.
The bell rang softly.
—chime.
Duller than before.
Not sharp.
Not dry.
A rounder sound,
carrying weight—
as if it held a trace of rain.
Akira stepped inside.
The temperature
had dropped slightly.
Not colder—
just lighter.
As though the air
had lost some of its density.
The light had changed too.
Not white.
A muted gray—
filtered through clouded sky,
soft and without edge.
He looked toward the counter.
Azusa was already there.
Her right elbow rested on the wood,
her fingers tracing
the rim of her cup—slowly.
Not evenly.
A faint wavering
in the motion.
Akira noticed that slight irregularity.
“…Morning.”
Her voice was lower than usual.
Carrying
a subtle softness—
like moisture in the air.
“Morning.”
He sat beside her.
The chair creaked softly.
Shorter than yesterday.
The distance between them
should have been the same.
And yet—
it felt slightly wider.
Just enough
that their elbows wouldn’t touch.
She glanced sideways.
“Doesn’t the air feel heavier today?”
She drew in a small breath
through her nose.
He did the same.
“…It’s going to rain.”
“Right?”
She smiled.
It was different.
Shorter.
A fraction quicker.
But the difference
didn’t feel unsettling.
If anything—
it felt natural.
The owner approached.
“What will you have today?”
His voice was calm.
With a subtle pause—
waiting.
Akira hesitated
for a brief moment.
Normally,
he wouldn’t have needed to think.
There was always
an answer ready.
But this time—
he chose.
Deliberately
in a different direction.
“…A café latte.”
The words felt unfamiliar
as he said them.
Heavier
than expected.
Azusa looked at him
instantly.
Her eyes widened
just slightly.
“Really?”
It came immediately.
“Yes.”
The owner only nodded.
Said nothing.
The silence itself
carried meaning.
A moment later,
Azusa spoke.
“I’ll have mine the same.”
She didn’t say black.
And for that brief instant—
a space
opened between them.
They had avoided
perfect alignment.
It was a small shift—
but enough
to change the flow of the air.
The cups were set down.
—tap.
The latte felt heavier.
A layer of pale foam
rested quietly on its surface.
He leaned in slightly.
Milk.
A faint sweetness—
subtle.
And beneath it,
the bitterness of coffee
settled deep.
Beside him,
the scent of black coffee rose.
Sharper.
Drier.
Different.
Clearly different.
But—
it didn’t break anything.
Azusa looked at the latte.
“…It’s kind of strange.”
Her fingers touched the handle.
“When you choose something different like this…”
She paused.
“It feels a little scary.”
It wasn’t a joke.
“What does?” he asked.
“I don’t know.”
She answered quickly.
“But it feels like…
everything might change.”
Akira thought
for a moment.
He lifted the cup.
The temperature—
lower than black coffee.
But softer
in the way it rested
in his hand.
“…Even if it changes…”
He chose his words.
“…if it continues,
isn’t that enough?”
Azusa didn’t answer immediately.
A slight delay.
Then—
her eyes softened.
“Continues?”
“Yes.”
He lifted the cup slightly.
“This too.”
He glanced at the latte.
“It’s not the same.”
A faint smile.
“But it hasn’t disappeared.”
Azusa exhaled.
Her shoulders
eased just a little.
“…Yeah.”
A quiet nod.
At that moment—
rain began to fall.
—tick.
One drop.
—tick… tick.
Then more.
Irregular.
Striking the glass
without rhythm.
And yet—
becoming a flow.
Akira listened.
Azusa turned
toward the window as well.
Almost at the same time.
Not quite.
A slight delay.
They both noticed it.
And neither of them
minded.
“Hey.”
She spoke softly.
“What if…”
Her finger traced
a slow circle
along the cup.
“…we remembered everything?”
A slight pause.
“Do you think
this would disappear?”
The rain grew heavier.
He thought
within that sound.
He didn’t know the answer.
But—
this, right now,
was real.
“…There are forms
that don’t vanish.”
Even to himself,
it sounded uncertain.
But not false.
She smiled slightly.
“What does that even mean?”
“I’m not sure.”
He took another sip.
“But if it keeps going like this…”
He turned slightly.
Their eyes met
for just a moment.
“…then maybe
it doesn’t have to be the same.”
Silence.
Only rain remained.
She didn’t look away.
Slowly,
she exhaled.
“…I like that.”
She lifted her cup.
Her hand moved—
just a little closer.
Not touching.
And yet—
the distance
was nearly gone.
Only air
remained between them.
And in that space—
warmth lingered.
Shared.
Not yet fully formed.
But undeniably present.
The rain didn’t stop
for a long time.
Neither did they move.
Nothing was decided.
Nothing returned.
They simply…
remained.
Holding what was there
as it was.
Time passed quietly.
And its rhythm
was no longer repetition.
It moved forward—
slowly,
but without doubt.
Different—
and continuing.
That was
the shape
they had become.
