Same Dream, Slightly Different

■ ■ Chapter 3: Same Dream, Slightly Different
The first thing he noticed was the sound.
Just before waking—
half submerged in sleep—
there was a rhythm, faint,
coming from somewhere far away.
—tap.
—tap.
—tap.
Something touching,
at steady intervals.
Not sharp.
Not loud.
More like something soft
meeting something firm.
He couldn’t tell what it was.
But—
it felt familiar.
That feeling came first.
Before sight.
Before thought.
Everything was white.
The light was too strong.
It erased the edges of things.
Nothing was visible—
and yet
something was undeniably there.
Breathing felt… heavy.
No—
not heavy.
Full.
Something filled his lungs
all the way through.
Not air.
Something softer.
Warmth.
—It’s warm.
There was something in his arms.
He was holding it.
Or… someone.
But there was no shape.
Only the certainty—
that it was there.
—Just once more.
A voice.
Very close.
So close it felt
as though it whispered
inside his ear.
A woman’s voice.
He knew that much.
But beyond that—
there was no outline.
—No.
This time it was his voice.
But something was off.
Not the meaning—
the weight of it.
It was meant to refuse.
And yet—
it didn’t fully resist.
As if something
had already been decided.
The white space trembled.
The light intensified.
Edges dissolved further.
—Don’t go.
That was the last thing.
Whether it was her voice
or something within him—
he could no longer tell.
And then—
he woke.
The ceiling was the same as always.
White surface.
A faint shadow at the corner.
Morning light slipped in
from the edge of the curtain.
He checked his phone.
9:01.
Again.
He inhaled.
His throat felt
slightly warm.
It felt like
someone had called his name.
But he couldn’t remember.
And when he tried—
something tightened
deep inside his chest.
He stopped.
His body understood
before his thoughts did:
any further—
would be dangerous.
Instead,
he looked at his hand.
Nothing.
And yet—
he had definitely
been holding something.
That sensation alone
remained in his palm.
A weight
that should have been gone—
still there.
—I don’t want to forget.
The thought came.
He didn’t know what.
But—
he couldn’t accept
letting it disappear.
Outside,
the air felt the same as yesterday.
Not identical.
But close enough
to echo it.
The city moved as it always did.
Only he felt
slightly out of step.
Without realizing it,
his feet had already turned
toward the café.
There was no reason.
Just—
a sense
that he needed to go.
He opened the door.
The bell rang.
—chime.
The same sound.
But today,
it lingered
just a little longer.
The owner looked up.
His eyes narrowed slightly.
“You’re early.”
Akira said nothing.
Instead,
he sat
in the same seat as yesterday.
Same height.
Same distance.
That alone
brought a faint sense of ease.
“Black?”
The owner’s voice.
“…Yes.”
It felt chosen
before he answered.
He didn’t question it.
The cup was placed before him.
The same warmth as yesterday.
He noticed—
and held his breath
for just a moment.
The same.
He felt relieved.
No reason.
And then—
The bell rang.
He turned.
She was there.
Azusa Shiraishi.
Their eyes met.
“…Knew it.”
She exhaled the words
like they had been waiting.
“What do you mean?”
he asked.
She smiled, slightly.
“I thought you’d be here.”
Not a guess.
A certainty.
She sat beside him
without hesitation.
The same distance.
“Did you dream?”
Sudden.
He paused.
But there was no reason to hide.
“…I did.”
She stopped moving.
“What was it like?”
He searched for words.
White.
Light.
Warmth.
And—
“…I think I was holding someone.”
Her breathing shifted—
just slightly.
“…Me too.”
A quiet alignment.
But then—
she continued.
“But mine—”
Her hand moved to the cup.
“—was the ocean.”
He looked up.
“The ocean?”
She nodded.
“I could hear waves.”
She narrowed her eyes, thinking.
“And… it was cold.”
Akira recalled his dream.
No cold.
The opposite.
So warm
it had almost been overwhelming.
And there—
the first difference appeared.
Not a perfect match.
But it didn’t feel wrong.
If anything—
it felt right.
“…They’re different,” he said.
She nodded.
“But…”
She lifted her cup.
The motion—again—
strangely familiar.
“…don’t they feel connected?”
It wasn’t a question.
Not really.
Just something
placed between them.
He lifted his cup.
The same warmth.
“…They do.”
That was all.
Different—
but not separate.
If anything—
because they were different,
they continued.
The feeling settled
quietly in his chest.
There was no sense
that it would break.
If anything—
it had changed,
just slightly—
to keep from breaking.
And somehow—
that felt
close to something like relief.
He couldn’t put it into words.
But he felt it.
