Two Cups / Same Distance

■ ■ Chapter 2: Two Cups / The Same Distance
The surface of the coffee was unusually still.
It should have trembled slightly—
just enough to remind you it was liquid.
But now,
there was no sign of movement.
No ripple.
The steam that had been there moments before
was gone.
In its place,
something thinner remained—
a faint layer lingering in the air.
The scent.
Bitterness from roasted beans,
and beneath it,
something almost sweet.
Not strong enough to name.
But once noticed,
it refused to leave.
Akira traced the rim of his cup
with his finger.
A slight dampness.
The warmth left behind
shifted slowly,
changing shape without form.
Beside him—
Azusa Shiraishi lifted her cup.
Almost at the same time.
Not perfect.
But close enough
that the difference barely existed.
The sound of porcelain
lifting from its saucer—
a soft friction.
Two.
They rose
to the same height.
They drank.
Bitterness spread across the tongue.
A moment later,
warmth settled deeper inside.
And in that space between—
no words were needed.
Azusa exhaled softly.
“…It’s the same.”
She didn’t say what.
But it was understood.
Akira gave a slight nod.
“…Yes.”
That was enough.
No explanation followed.
Sound returned to the room,
slowly.
Pages turning somewhere in the back.
The low hum of a coffee grinder.
The distant movement of traffic beyond glass.
All of it felt
just slightly out of sync.
As if the world itself
was delayed by a fraction.
Azusa ran her fingertip
along the wooden counter.
Each small irregularity
registered under her touch.
“This place,” she said,
“I feel like I’ve been here before.”
He had the strange feeling
he had already heard that—
or perhaps
he remembered it
before she had spoken.
“It’s our first time,” he replied.
There was no other answer.
She smiled, slightly.
“I know.”
It was light.
But not dismissive.
She leaned just a little closer.
The distance narrowed.
Normally,
there would be space.
But here—
it felt right.
“Hey,” she said.
He looked at her.
“Earlier—
when we ordered…”
Their eyes met.
“…yes.”
“We said it at the same time.”
“The black coffee.”
The words hung in the air.
“Doesn’t that feel a little too precise
to be coincidence?”
Akira searched for an answer.
There wasn’t one.
“…Maybe.”
Neither agreement
nor refusal.
She raised her cup again.
And in that moment—
something caught.
That movement.
I know this.
Not from a distance—
from closer.
For longer.
But it slipped
before it could take shape.
Like a thread that dissolves
the moment you touch it.
Akira looked away.
He felt he shouldn’t keep watching.
The sound of her cup returning—
a soft click.
He set his down
at the same moment.
Again.
She spoke his name.
“Sakaki.”
He paused.
For a second,
it didn’t make sense—
how she knew.
Of course
he had introduced himself.
But it felt like
the first time hearing it.
“Yes?”
She held his gaze.
“Can I ask you something strange?”
“…Go ahead.”
A brief hesitation.
“We just met, right?”
Her eyes shifted slightly,
as if searching for the words.
“Then why does this feel so…
calm?”
The question wasn’t light.
It sank quietly,
deep.
Akira didn’t answer immediately.
He began to think—
then stopped.
The moment he tried to explain,
something felt like it might break.
“…I don’t know.”
Honest.
She lowered her gaze again.
Her finger traced the wood once more.
“Yeah,” she said softly.
“But…”
She continued.
“…it’s not bad.”
That, at least,
was certain.
Akira inhaled slightly.
He understood.
It wasn’t something he could explain.
But he couldn’t deny it either.
If anything—
“…No,” he said quietly.
“It isn’t.”
Time moved slowly.
The coffee had lowered,
half gone.
The temperature had softened—
but not completely faded.
That warmth
felt right.
Azusa stood.
“I should go.”
Natural.
Akira stood as well.
Again—
almost together.
Not perfectly.
But close.
They paid.
The owner looked at them,
one, then the other.
Almost said something.
Stopped.
“Come again.”
It sounded ordinary.
But carried
something slightly heavier.
They stepped outside.
The bell rang.
The air shifted.
Sound rushed back in.
And yet—
the quiet from inside
didn’t entirely disappear.
They began to walk.
Side by side.
The distance formed naturally—
not too close,
not too far.
At the signal,
they stopped.
At the same time.
Azusa spoke.
“What do you think this is?”
“…What?”
“All of this.”
A small pause.
“…Is it just coincidence?”
Akira kept his eyes on the light.
“…I don’t think all of it is.”
For the first time,
he stepped slightly closer
to an answer.
She glanced at him.
A quiet relief
passed across her face.
“Yeah,” she said.
The light changed.
They stepped forward.
Their pace—
naturally aligned.
Neither of them
noticed.
But it had matched.
Akira found himself thinking—
This is fine.
No reason.
Even without remembering—
even without knowing—
this
still holds.
And that
was enough.
The feeling settled
quietly within him.
There was no sense
that it would break.
If anything—
it felt as though
this moment existed
precisely
to remain.
And for the first time,
something like certainty
began to form.
