I had already come to love Haru. Even if I were told that Haru and I were complete strangers, I could never accept it. No matter what anyone said, Haru was my child. Thinking that, I put that fact along with the single sheet of paper and locked it away in my wallet.
I had intended to never reveal this to Miwa, of course, and not to Haru either for the rest of my life, and keep it to myself.
But… now that I have separated from Miwa, I cannot help but think about it. Even as I say I love Haru, I am telling him a big lie. It’s not just a lie. I used dirty means and separated him from his mother as well. Just because I am lonely, do I really have the right to take his real father and mother away from Haru?
“Are we really a family?”
Miwa’s words came back, piercing me.
Miwa and I could not become a family. But are Haru and I not a family either? Should I call Miwa even now and confess the truth?
At that moment, a high-pitched voice rang through the room.
“Daddy!”
Startled, I looked at Haru, who was standing, holding onto the table.
“Haru… did you just say ‘Daddy’?”
Then Haru quietly let go of the table. I held my breath and watched him.
Carefully, but with steady steps, Haru walked toward me, his arms spread, one step, one step.
For the first time, Haru spoke—and walked!
When he fell into my arms, Haru let out a happy laugh. And he shouted with pride again and again. “Daddy! Daddy!”
I held Haru tightly. Tears spilled from my eyes, running hot down both my cheeks and Haru’s.
“Haru! Haru!”
“Daddy! Daddy!”
I’m sorry, I’m sorry, Haru. The one holding you is not your real father. Your mother—I drove her out.
If you learn the truth someday, you will probably hate me deeply.
But I could never let you go.
You are, without a doubt, my one and only family.
If I lost you, there would be nothing left for me.
To see your smile, I wake up.
To hold you, I get up.
Haru, at least right now, you need me, right?
I’m completely selfish, cowardly, a liar. I won’t ask you to forgive me.
But I swear that I love you—that’s the truth. I have loved you until now, and I will keep loving you from now on.
Even if someday you come to hate me, please understand this…
