It seemed Miwa took my silence differently.
“I know you’ve been trying hard for me and Haru, and I’m grateful. But I can’t do this anymore. If things stay like this, I feel like I’ll start to hate you… and even Haru. So…”
We both looked at the table at the same time.
“There’s still debt left, right?”
I murmured.
“I’ll manage that somehow…” she replied.
Ah, I see. It all fell into place.
Miwa has another man. Miwa has somewhere else to go. The door was opened. All that’s left is for her to leave. Once it’s come to this, there’s no point in trying to stop her.
A heavy, heavy breath came out from deep inside me.
An overwhelming fatigue came over me, until I couldn’t endure it anymore. In the end, I’m the same as my father. That’s what I felt. I’m just my father’s son… that’s all.
So I picked up the pen. I mechanically filled in my part of the divorce papers.
But I stopped when it came to writing the child’s name. There were separate spaces depending on who would have custody.
“…What about Haru?”
The moment I said it, something cold ran down my back. Before Miwa could answer, I hurried on.
“If you’re going to take Haru with you, you’ll have to pay me back the money I’ve put into this.”
Miwa looked up, surprised. I stared back at her.
“It’s easily over two million. Pay back all the money I paid for you. Now. Right now.”
“Th—that’s…” she began, but I cut her off and kept going.
“Add what’s left, and it comes to three million. Go tell your man that.”
At that, Miwa’s body began to tremble.
“If you can’t pay it all at once, I’ll sell what you owe me to the yakuza. Then they’ll come directly to you for it.”
“Ichii…”
I shifted my gaze from her pleading face to Haru in my arms.
“Miwa. You’ve been neglecting childcare all along, haven’t you? Don’t you think you lost your right to be a mother a long time ago?”
I threw each word at her.
“You just said you’d start to hate Haru, didn’t you? Someone who hates her child out of her own loneliness, someone who ignores her child and goes off to another man—can you really call that a mother?”
I knew perfectly well these were the most painful things I could say to Miwa. I said them anyway. Otherwise they wouldn’t work. The whole time, I kept my eyes on Haru.
Miwa’s sobbing continued for a while, then grew muffled, and when I looked, she was on her hands on the floor. She bowed her head deeply and said,
“Please take care of Haru…”
