“They say you really loved that person… Maybe you still love her, maybe you’re still seeing her even now… Even if you were, I wouldn’t know, and I couldn’t complain…”
There were plenty of things I wanted to say back.
Because I chose to become a family with you, I broke up with Saki, whom I loved so much, and married you. Loving your child is natural for a parent. Why are you the one neglecting Haru? You’re his real mother. If you’re his mother, then act like one and love him more. Do you even know how I feel about Haru? Do you even know how much I wear down my mind and body being with women? You think I’m still seeing Saki? Do you even know how much I want that, how I know I can’t do it anyway, how I try to forget and still can’t, how the only place I can picture her is in cigarette smoke—do you understand?
But in the end, I said nothing and just looked at the sheet of paper between us. I couldn’t say anything. If I opened my mouth, tears would come out against my will, and deep down I couldn’t deny that what Miwa was saying made sense.
…How did we end up like this, and since when?
When I decided to get married, I really did intend to spend my life with Miwa. I have never forgotten the joy when Haru came into the world. Miwa gave me Haru. That was something only Miwa could do, and I felt I could never thank her enough. Since Miwa is part of Haru, I thought I had to carry all of Miwa, just as I do Haru. That’s why I didn’t care what it took to pay back her debt. I believed that was how to protect my family. —Where was that wrong?
But the paper in front of me told me that I was wrong after all.
Did I have sex with Miwa during her pregnancy or after she gave birth? Did I ever call her name, whisper that I loved her, hold and kiss her gently? Did I ever worry when she was late coming home? Did I ever think of her as anything other than Haru’s mother? And if it had been Saki instead, would I have done something like selling my body?
Even though I knew Miwa’s silent protest, her unbearable loneliness, I kept ignoring them—the one thing I should never have done.
But I was afraid to face Miwa. To face my true feelings. To face the truth. Yes—that was the undeniable truth. And more than anything, I was afraid of Miwa finding out. That’s why I just kept my mouth shut. I felt relieved not looking at her, and kept avoiding conversation. Even now, that hasn’t changed.
