I woke up to a rummaging sound. It was quite bright beyond the curtain. It seemed the rain had stopped.
Careful not to wake Haru, who was sleeping, I quietly slipped out of the futon and went into the next room, where Miwa was packing her things into a bag. She glanced at me once, but immediately looked away.
I said nothing, went to the kitchen, turned on the exhaust fan, and smoked while preparing espresso. I drank the freshly made espresso slowly, standing, and lit a second cigarette. Then I checked my phone to see if there had been any messages from the shop since last night. As expected, a reservation had come in from the caregiver. Tuesday, two days later, seven in the evening. I entered it into my phone’s schedule and left the kitchen.
Miwa called out,
“Ichii.”
When I looked, she had changed clothes and redone her makeup at some point.
“I have something to talk about.”
Without a word, I sat cross-legged in front of the low table. An A3-sized document was laid out on it. Miwa’s name was written on part of it.
I looked at Miwa. Miwa looked at me. Her eyes were red and bloodshot.
I looked back down at the table.
“What is this?”
“…Divorce papers.”
I could tell that just by looking.
“You want to break up with me?”
Miwa, still staring at the paper, said,
“What do you want to do, Ichii?”
I let out a sigh.
“Why are you asking me that? You’re the one who brought this up.”
Tears fell steadily from Miwa’s eyes, dropping onto the paper and leaving several stains. In a trembling voice, she said again,
“What do you want to do, Ichii?”
