“Lately, you’re always the one who comes to pick him up.”
The caregiver said, and I answered while putting a raincoat on Haru,
“…Yeah. She’s been getting home late a lot.”
Haru could now pull himself up and crawl, and if I looked away for a moment, he would try to wander off on his own. When I took hold of his legs and pulled him back, he let out a cheerful giggle.
“Hey now, Haru. We’re going home.”
Then I asked the young caregiver who had attended to us,
“Is he eating well?””
Haru, nearly eleven months old, started eating solid food four months ago.
“Yes. Recently, he seems to prefer the meals here to milk. He’s doing very well.”
“I see. That’s a relief.”
“He isn’t picky and eats just about anything, so it makes things easier for us. And he doesn’t have any allergies.”
“Kids with allergies must be hard.”
I brushed his hair like black silk back from his smooth forehead. The caregiver bent closer from the side to look at Haru.
“That’s right. There are all kinds—eggs, milk, wheat, meat, even fruit. Some children whose parents say they have no allergies sometimes don’t show symptoms until they eat here for the first time, so we have to be very careful. But with Haru, since you had him properly tested for allergies before starting solid food, it really helps.”
“…To be honest, I didn’t want to have a blood test done on someone this small, but I was worried, and I thought it would be wrong to inconvenience the daycare.”
“You really take good care of Haru, don’t you?”
“Well… he is my child…”
When I stood up, she stood as well and handed me my things.
“Thank you for tonight.”
I gave a small bow, took my umbrella from the stand, and as I reached the door, she unlocked it for me. Then, with her hand on the handle, she spoke to me, her head slightly lowered.
“Do you not work during the day?”
“…Basically.”
“Um…”
“What is it?”
Her voice was very quiet, so I leaned forward a little to hear her.
“My day off… is Tuesdays.”
Haru gave a yawn, like a small animal. I bounced him lightly and adjusted my hold, then rested against the door, waiting for her next words. Her eyes peered at me hesitantly from behind her bangs.
“Well… if you’d like… would you like to go to lunch together sometime? Ah—Haru can come too. A new café opened that allows children. It’s… quite nice, actually. Um… if you’d like, I mean…”
I looked at her steadily. Her loosely waved chestnut bob suited her well enough. When our eyes met, she hurriedly looked down again, her face reddening before my eyes, all the way to her earlobes, which I found amusing. I brought my lips close to her ear.
“Not during the day—let’s meet at night.”
“Huh?”
She looked up, still flushed.
“I’m usually here. Ask them directly about the rates and how to make a reservation. You can reach them by phone during the day as well.”
I handed her the business card of the shop where I borrow a table. She looked back and forth between me and the card, as if surprised.
“…Rates?”
I grinned.
“It’s just a normal bar, so don’t worry. I just use it as a meeting place. Rather than going to some ridiculously expensive host club, I’ll satisfy you far more. Try it once. …Oh, this is on the house.”
After a quick glance to make sure no one was watching, I kissed her heated cheek, still stunned.
“Then I’ll be waiting to see you at the shop.”
Without waiting for her reply, I opened the door and stepped outside. As I walked toward the elevator, Haru opened his eyes and looked at me.
“What’s up, Haru? Got something to say?”
Haru stayed silent.
“Are you mad? Because I just tried to sell myself to your teacher?”
I stepped into the elevator and pressed the down button. A sigh slipped out.
“Can’t be helped. You and I both have to go on living…”
