The moment I got out of the elevator in that hotel, I clicked my tongue. I’d left my umbrella in the room. But I didn’t want to go back and face the customer again, so I stopped by the hotel shop and bought a new one. The one I’d left was just another cheap plastic umbrella.
Listening to the soft squeaking of my sneakers on the marble floor, I crossed the glittering lobby lit by a grand chandelier.
When I came up to the exit, the doorman outside opened the heavy wooden door for me. As I passed, he said,
“Thank you very much.”
I couldn’t help but smile wryly. I had already become a familiar face to him. At first he had said, “Take care,” but after a few visits, it had changed to “Thank you very much.” I always came in with a different woman and, after two or three hours, I was the only one to leave, so he must have figured out what I was there for.
As I was about to go around the driveway loop, my steps suddenly stopped. A couple were exchanging a long kiss as if reluctant to part. For no reason, my chest tightened, and I looked away.
As I tried to start walking, my steps tangled and my body swayed. Someone steadied my arm—it was the doorman.
“Are you quite all right, sir?”
“Thank you. I’m fine.”
He bowed.
“Good night.”
“Good night.”
I opened my umbrella toward the night. Leaving the great castle of light behind, I stepped into a curtain of water filled with the sound of rain. As I walked, laughter welled up in me. The doorman might have thought I was pretty worn out. …Well, I was tired. After all, I’d gone four hours straight tonight.
I took a deep breath. The clean air, cooled by the long rain, flowed into my lungs. In its place, I exhaled the old air. Naturally, my steps quickened. I felt an urgency to get there.
It’s been like this lately. Fear and anxiety rule me all the time. I can’t let my guard down even for a moment. The more precious something is, the easier it is to lose. I already know that all too well…
