第十三章 ティファニー・エターナルサークル・ラトル（１９）
アパートにミワはまだいなかった。今夜は遅くなると言っていた。
ストーブに火を入れ、ハルを風呂に入れながら自分もサッとシャワーを浴びる。そのあとハルにミルクを飲ませ、添い寝してやりながら自分もウトウトとしていると、ドアが開く音がしてミワが帰ってきた。
やがて隣の布団にミワが潜りこむ。
「今、何時？」
訊くと、
「五時」
と答えた。
そうしてしばらく黙っているのでもう寝たのかと思ったところで、また後ろから話しかけられた。
「イチイ」
「なんだ」
「……今週は、何人と寝たの？」
「ダブリも入れて十二。だいぶ稼げたよ」
「ふうん……」
俺はくるりとミワのほうを向いた。
「今月の返済日にはまだ一週間あるけど、もうひと月分貯まったから、明日店に行く前に金を持っていくつもりなんだ。少しでも早く返したほうが、それだけ利息がつかなくて得だからな」
ミワはじっと布団の奥に目を注いでいたが、
「イチイ」
と、もう一度言った。
「んん」
あくびを噛み殺しながら返事をする。
「……なんでもない」
「そうか？ おやすみ」
「……おやすみなさい」
それでもう一度ハルのほうへ向き直り、その温かさを感じながら眠りについた。
Miwa still wasn’t at the apartment. She had said she’d be late tonight.
I lit the heater, and while bathing Haru, I took a quick shower myself. After that I fed him milk, and as I lay down with him, I too began to doze off, I heard the door open and Miwa came home.
Before long, she slipped into the futon beside me.
I asked, “What time is it?”
“Five,” she said.
She stayed silent for a while, and just when I thought she had fallen asleep, I heard her speak again from behind me.
“Ichii.”
“What?”
“…How many people did you sleep with this week?”
“Twelve, including repeats. I made quite a bit.”
“I see…”
I turned to face Miwa.
“The repayment date is still a week away, but I’ve already saved up a month’s worth, so I’m planning to take the money before going to the shop tomorrow. The sooner we pay it back, the less interest we get charged, so it works in our favor.”
Miwa kept her eyes fixed on the depths of the futon,
“Ichii,” she said again.
“Mm.”
I answered, suppressing a yawn.
“…It’s nothing.”
“Is that so? Good night.”
“…Good night.”
I turned back toward Haru and, feeling his warmth, fell asleep.
