I refused the customer’s request to extend, took the money, and left the hotel ahead of her, moving at almost a run through streets where the bustle still lingered. Tonight it was my turn to pick up Haru.
The unlicensed twenty-four-hour daycare where we left Haru was in an old, worn building in a corner of the entertainment district. I rode the rattling elevator up to the fifth floor. The thought crossed my mind—would this place really be safe in a fire or something?—but it had taken time to find a vacancy even here. The low-cost licensed daycare centers were full, and in any case they weren’t open late into the night when we worked.
I stood in front of an iron door rusted in places and rang the bell, and a staff member inside opened it. The moment it did, a thick, close air filled with the smells of many children and their muttering voices rushed out. Haru was asleep in the middle of it.
“He was crying until just now, but it seems he got tired and fell asleep.”
Haru, handed to me by the caregiver, was limp and breathing faintly. There were traces of tears at the corners of his eyes. I gently kissed his forehead. Sorry I can’t stay with you all the time.
When I wrapped him in a thick white hooded coat, he woke up a little and let out a cry.
“Unyaa!”
Two round eyes like black pearls looked up at me, and his hands wandered in the air as if searching for something. When I slipped a finger into them, he smiled, satisfied, and closed his eyes again.
Holding him as he was, I made my way home along a narrow street with little foot traffic, guided by the streetlights. In the keen, frozen air, Haru’s weight and warmth came through to me, like life itself, packed inside him.
As I turned a corner, a slight wind stirred, and Haru’s scent wrapped around me. That usual sweet, slightly raw smell, like honey. A nostalgic smell, as if I had smelled it somewhere long ago… I tightened my arms around him, buried my nose in his neck, and breathed in his smell deeply. A painful joy, like grief, rose from somewhere deep and filled my whole body.
Because Haru is here, I can still go on living. For Haru, I can endure anything. Even someone as stained as I am—through Haru, I could be remade into something clean. That was how it felt.
