I lit a second cigarette. The customer is probably getting impatient, waiting for me. If she wants to wait, let her wait. I take a deliberately slow drag. Then I close my eyes and, as I exhale, listen.
The only good thing about this shop is that it’s close to the river. The museum is hidden behind a large apartment building, but between the sounds of passing cars, I can faintly hear the water. I shut my eyes, listening to the sound of the river, lean against the peeling railing of the building, and flick off the ash. In my mind, I picture the crystal ashtray Saki gave me.
I just couldn’t bring myself to let go of that ashtray. But I can’t smoke in a room with a child, and in any case I would feel uneasy using it in front of Miwa, so it’s still kept in the red Baccarat box, put away in the back of the closet with my things.
I keep that ashtray just so I can feel that it’s still there. And every time I smoke, I imagine I’m using it. Or maybe I smoke just so I can imagine using it.
Thinking about it like this, I can’t help feeling I’m doing something empty, but people do find distraction in the smallest things, don’t they? Even if it seems trivial to others, it can give you the strength you need to go on living.
In fact, I really need that strength. Right now. To go back into the shop, look at the customer, and talk—I absolutely need this one cigarette.
