The customers were easier to find than I had expected. Once I found the first two or three, the rest came through word of mouth.

I borrow a table at a shop run by an acquaintance and use it as a meeting place with customers. Those who want to buy me call the shop to make a reservation and come at the designated time. The customer, guided to a seat in the back, sits across from me and is required to order a bottle whether they drink or not. That becomes the shop’s profit.

I have a few drinks with the customer, then leave the shop together and spend several hours. Sometimes we go straight to a hotel, sometimes we go into another place. Even where we do it—if the customer wants, a back alley is fine. After all, I’m bought with money, and while I’m bought, my body belongs to the customer. I don’t pick and choose customers either. As long as they’re women and pay properly, that’s enough.

I sleep with about ten people a week and make around five to six hundred thousand yen a month. Compared to hosts who squeeze everything out of customers and do nothing for them, it’s really quite modest.

I quit “Kohaku” at the same time I started this line of work. I drifted completely away from the friends I used to hang out with. No—I was the one who avoided them. Hiro calls me now and then, but we still don’t meet. He doesn’t try to force it either. He just talks amusingly about gossip and things like his new girlfriend. He never brings up my new job. He’s got strong quirks, but he’s always been the kind of guy who absolutely won’t do the one thing I really hate.

…Lately, I often remember Saki. It’s been almost a year since we broke up, and yet her image is still clearly there in my mind. At first I tried to forget her, but in the end I couldn’t. No—the truth is, I didn’t want to forget.

In the brief moments between work when I smoke, I think about Saki as if taking out a secret meant only for myself. Honestly, I can’t love Miwa the way I loved Saki. Even now, Saki is still someone special to me. I probably won’t ever love a woman like that again.

When I told her Miwa was pregnant, I had hoped—just a little—that Saki would be jealous, that she would cry and not want to break up with me. But none of that happened after all, and Saki, just as always, in her calm voice, only said, “Goodbye.”

The truth is, I had known for a long time. That just as I loved Saki, Saki didn’t love me like that. She simply accepted me—she never needed me.

I wanted to protect her. I wanted to keep her close, like something precious, never taking my eyes off her for even a moment. But in the end, that was just my own self-satisfaction. Sometimes Saki would look fed up, and I would pretend not to notice. After binding her so tightly, and then getting another woman pregnant and leaving her—how utterly exasperated must she have been with a selfish man like me? The moment I walked out the door, she must have felt a sense of relief. By now she’s probably forgotten me completely and found someone new. A woman like Saki wouldn’t stay alone forever. Maybe she got back together with that guy from the same workplace. No—she might even already be married. I have no way of knowing.

I knew I should wish for her happiness, but even imagining it for a moment made it unbearably painful.

Since I moved out of my old place, I haven’t crossed the bridge. On the other side is the museum where Saki works. I rented my new apartment in the opposite direction from her place.

Even so, late at night, on my way back from work, when the loneliness becomes too much, I take a slight detour and visit the small park before the bridge.

Standing in that dark place where even the streetlights barely reach, I look toward the other side and can see the large building lit up through the gaps in the trees.

I used to look at the museum like this while waiting to meet Saki. Inside was the most precious thing in the world, and that I would soon be able to hold it—thinking that used to fill me with happiness and pride. Just thinking that Saki was mine made me feel like my own value had gone up. —What an idiot I was.
