In time, the season passed through autumn and slipped once more into the middle of winter.
In the deep cold, I happened to look up, and Orion was shining, lonely.
I lit a cigarette and drew the smoke in deeply. With my eyes closed, I felt the nicotine being carried to every corner of my body. When I finish this, I have to go back to the shop. A customer is waiting for me. But for now, I will try not to think about that…
*
Right now, I sell my body to make money. There is no other way to put it—I am selling my body. Like the prostitutes around town, I sleep with customers and take money. The only difference is that I don’t belong to any shop and take customers on my own. I started doing this to pay back Miwa’s debt. I had nothing else, so the only thing I could think of was to turn myself into money.
When Miwa found out what I was doing, she cried and asked me to stop, but I asked, “Then what do we do?” and she fell silent.
The problem was not the yakuza behind them, but the club manager who lent Miwa money and the underground lenders themselves—I knew that. They lend out money they themselves borrowed from the yakuza, so if they can’t collect it, they are immediately in danger, ruled by that fear. They carry debts far more terrifying than Miwa’s and are chased day after day by repayments that barely keep things turning. Any normal sense of profit and loss has long since been lost. So it’s useless to consult the police or the authorities. On the contrary, once cornered, there’s no telling what they might do. In fact, you often hear stories of unrelated friends or family being stabbed, or houses being set on fire, over money.
All of the money Miwa had borrowed ultimately came from a single yakuza. Loan sharks introduce each other, so at the root, they are usually connected.
I went to the yakuza behind the money and made a deal. I’d repay the money without fail. In return, since I would pay him directly without going through the lenders, I made him promise to lower the interest to forty percent a year and to never let the lenders have anything to do with us again once it was repaid.
You might think making a promise with a yakuza is foolish, but they unexpectedly keep their word. For one thing, since they are not bound by law, in a sense it’s a kind of business built on trust. Also, I told him that if he broke the promise, I would without fail go to the police. Yakuza are far more self-protective than people think. They fear the dissolution of their organization to an extreme degree, so they hate getting the police involved more than anyone.
The yakuza offered to introduce me to customers, but of course I refused.
“I can repay this much in a year without your help.”
When I said that, he laughed.
“I like you, kid. You’ve got guts, and you’re no fool. Well then, let’s see what you’ve got. If you were a woman, I wouldn’t let you work freelance like that in this town, but unfortunately male prostitution isn’t under my jurisdiction. If you succeed, I might try expanding into that side of the business. When that happens, I might even buy your clients.”
“Please develop your own clients through your own business efforts. In return, once I’ve paid off the debt, I’ll get out of this line of work, so I won’t interfere with your business.”
At that, the yakuza burst out laughing again.
