“Hey, look at this. Haru’s legs are really strong.”
Holding Haru and letting him stand on my lap, I called out to Miwa. Haru kept bending and stretching his legs, bouncing up and down like he was on a trampoline. Perhaps he thought he was moving on his own, and he was laughing proudly.
“Ichii…”
Miwa muttered from beside me in an unusually dark voice.
“Hmm?”
“…I was thinking of going back to the club, maybe starting next week…”
Surprised, I turned around.
“The club—you mean the hostess club you used to work at?”
“Yeah…”
“What are you saying all of a sudden? What are you going to do about Haru?”
Miwa was awkwardly folding the laundry.
“I’ll put him in daycare.”
I could not believe how casually Miwa said it.
“Haru is only three months old.”
“It’s fine. I hear there are places that take babies from one month old.”
I felt a little irritated.
“That’s not the point. For example, what about feeding?”
“I’ll buy formula.”
“Breast milk is obviously better. And I can’t trust strangers. There was that news the other day about a fatal accident at a daycare, right? What’s going on? We should have enough money…”
Miwa stopped what she was doing and stared at Haru’s clothes on her knees.
“When I quit before, I had promised I would come back after giving birth… They seem to be short on people now.”
Come to think of it, a few days ago, Miwa seemed to have been on the phone with someone for a long time in the next room.
“That promise doesn’t matter. The child is more important. If it comes to that, I’ll talk to them directly.”
Then, to my surprise, Miwa began to sob quietly.
“What is it? What’s wrong?”
Even when I asked, she only kept repeating, “Don’t call the club.” Something was not right. After about an hour of calming her down and coaxing her, I was finally able to get it out of her.
Miwa had over one million yen in debt to the hostess club where she had worked. Not only that, she had also borrowed from several moneylenders, and I found out that in total it came to around three million yen. The moneylenders were all shady outfits introduced by the club—so-called loan sharks.
Miwa hiccuped through her tears.
“I was paying it back little by little from the money you gave me, Ichii, but I just couldn’t keep up… The manager contacted me a few days ago and said neither he nor the other companies could wait any longer, and that if I came back to the club, they’d cut the interest a little… I’m sorry, I’m sorry.”
When I checked the bankbook, even the little money we had saved for Haru was all gone. I was stunned.
