How much time had passed…?

“Fnyaa—!”

An out-of-place sound—somehow like a cat’s cry.

I felt the air around me loosen, and I hesitantly opened my eyes.

Miwa’s face had become unbelievably calm.

Maybe because I’d opened my eyes so suddenly, everything was out of focus.

The light was blindingly bright, and rainbow-colored rings bloomed one after another like flowers before my eyes.

“Congratulations—it’s a boy!”

I heard the nurse’s bright voice nearby.

And then something small and soft was placed in my arms. I stared, in a daze, back and forth between it and the nurse.

The nurse grinned, then quickly took it from me and placed it in Miwa’s arms. The child clung to her chest, making soft, mewling sounds.

A child… my child?

When our eyes met, Miwa gave a small smile, then looked back at the child.

As I wiped Miwa’s sweat-soaked face, I felt the strength drain from my body.

Alive! Alive! Alive!

Miwa—and not just her, my child too!

Thank you, Miwa! Thank you!

No matter what happens from here on, I knew I could never repay her.

I did not really have much money to spare, but I bought a rattle made of silver from “Tiffany” as a birth present for the child I named Haru. Like Haru’s other belongings, it was secondhand, won at auction, but it was almost like new, and I got it for half the list price.

I disinfected it with alcohol, polished it carefully, and gently shook it near Haru’s ear. It made a chiming sound, like many small bells rubbing against each other.

The design, called “Eternal Circle”, is by Elsa Peretti, as is the famous “Open Heart” from “Tiffany”, and is said to represent life circulating eternally.

Where did Haru’s life come from? As I let Haru hold the “Eternal Circle” in his small hand, I thought about that.

Did that one reckless, throwaway act between me and Miwa really create Haru? At that time, I felt that I myself had no value or meaning. Nothing but despair and emptiness ruled me. The small amount of bodily fluid released then, and the vodka and Pringles I vomited up the next morning—there was almost no difference between them for me. And yet Haru was born from that, already an irreplaceable existence to me.

To be honest, even now I cannot believe that I myself have become a parent. Even so, that I love Haru is an undeniable fact.

The strongly wavy, tousled black hair, the bright, round eyes framed by thick eyelashes, the reddish cheeks and plump lips. Everything is astonishingly small, and yet everything is full of life. The expressions that shift from crying to smiling and back again are all lovable, and I never got tired of watching them.

My precious family. I have finally got my own family. This time, I won’t let it go. I am no longer a small child. So if I try, I’ll be able to do it.

Rubbing my cheek against Haru and feeling the softness of it, I thought, strongly—strongly.
