It was three weeks early, so we hadn’t prepared anything. I rummaged through the apartment, stuffed the instructed towels and Miwa’s clothes into a paper bag, and when I returned to the hospital, Miwa was alone in an oddly spacious hospital room, in the middle of groaning.

Startled, I pressed the call button, and the same nurse came. She said, calm-faced,

“It’s labor pains. They’re still ten minutes apart, so the delivery will take a little longer.”

“How much longer will it take?”

“Well… since it’s her first baby, it might take a while. It’ll probably be over by today.”

By today? This is going to continue for almost twenty more hours?

In the room, Miwa’s pained voice came at regular intervals, as she lay on the bed, sweat pouring down her face.

“Isn’t there any medicine or anesthesia or something?”

When I asked, the nurse let out a little laugh. I had no idea what was funny. This was clearly not a situation like this to laugh about.

“We don’t do pain-free delivery here. It’ll be fine, don’t worry. She’ll give birth naturally.”

As time passed, Miwa’s labor pains grew worse, and as if lying down was too much for her, she leaned against a chair, breathing hard. Every time the pain came, I rubbed her back, though I didn’t even know if it was helping or not.

The nurse came every hour, checked the machine attached to Miwa’s belly, measured the time, and then said in an unhurried voice,

“Not yet. The baby’s doing fine. It’s okay, it’s okay,”

and it finally got to me. This is a major hospital with the best of modern medicine, right? And all they do is wait for it to be born naturally? Then how is this any different from some old midwife?

Since being admitted, Miwa had been restricted from both food and water, and had been suffering, hardly eating or drinking. It had already been over half a day. In this weakened state, I couldn’t think “It’s okay” at all. I couldn’t shake the feeling that everything was wrong. At least I understood one thing: the saying “giving birth is easier than worrying about it” was definitely wrong.
