第十三章 ティファニー・エターナルサークル・ラトル（５）
「で、出産予定は七月末だって？」
「はい」
ユミさんは得たりとうなずいた。
「じゃあ、ちゃんとそのころ、うちの大学病院のベッドを空けてもらったからね」
「は？」
「普通、今の週数からじゃ予約できないんだけど、一年目の研修では私も産科にいたし、そのときの部長には色々貸しもあるからさ。なんとか入れてもらえたから」
借りじゃなくて、貸しですか。
「でも、もう出産する病院は決まっているんですけど」
「ヒロから、どこか聞いたよ。ダメ、ダメ、あんなとこ」
ユミさんは決めつけるように言った。
「え、なんで……」
「生まれた子に重篤な事態が発生したら、すぐに小児科医に診てもらわないといけないんだよ。そのときに一番重要なのはなんといってもスピード。ところがアンタのとこの、かかりつけ医は優柔不断で有名でね。それで今までに何度も危篤の新生児患者を搬送し遅れて、殺しているんだよ」
それを聞いて俺はさすがにギョッとした。
「親父の病院でもいいけど、それなら最初からＮＩＣＵがあるところがいいしね」
「ＮＩＣＵって？」
「新生児特定集中治療室のこと。小児科とはまた別部門で、新生児専門の医師と設備がそろっているの。この辺じゃ、私の勤めている大学病院と、あとは国立病院にしかないよ」
「なるほど」
ユミさんは若干呆れたような表情になった。
「アンタね、自分の大事な子どもを預ける場所を、もうちょっとよく考えなきゃダメじゃない。そもそもなんで一言私に相談しないのさ」
「いや、彼女が見つけてきた病院だったものですから……」
「彼女は自分の体のことだけで手いっぱいなんだよっ。そこをフォローするのが、男の役目だろっ。このスカタン！」
ソーセージのつけ合わせのピクルスが飛んできた。思わずよけると、
「よけんな、バカ！」
と、すかさずもう一つ飛んできて俺の目にあたった。……ユミさんの投げた物をよけてはいけないという鉄則を、つい忘れていた。
「……ありがとうございます、ユミさん」
人の話をまったく聞かない独断専行型で乱暴な人だけど、根っこは親切だし、言っていることはもっともなことが多い。特に今回の産院の件では教えられないと分からないことばかりだった。それで俺は、ビネガーがしみる目を拭きながらお礼を言った。ユミさんが同じ病院にいるかと思うとなんとなく落ち着かない気もするけど、知り合いが紹介してくれたと言えばミワもそれだけ安心するだろう。
「大丈夫だよ。大学病院には優秀なスタッフがそろっているから。まあ若干治療より実験や研究を優先する嫌いはあるけど、それは大学付属だから仕方ないよね」
うん、大丈夫……かな。
“So the due date is the end of July, right?”
“Yes.”
Yumi-san nodded, satisfied.
“I’ve already made sure there’s a bed for you at our university hospital around then.”
“What?”
“Normally you can’t book a spot at this stage of the pregnancy, but I did my first-year residency in obstetrics, and I’ve got a few favors from the department head back then. So I managed to get you in.”
Not that you owe him—he owes you?
“But we’ve decided on a hospital for the birth.”
“I heard from Hiro where it is. No, no. No good—that place.”
Yumi-san said decisively.
“Huh? Why…?”
“If something serious happens after the baby is born, you have to have a pediatrician see them immediately. Then the most important thing is speed. But your regular doctor is famous for being indecisive. Time and again, he’s delayed transferring critically ill newborn patients and killed them.”
That actually made me flinch.
“You could use my dad’s clinic too, but if you do, you should go somewhere with a NICU from the start.”
“What’s a NICU?”
“Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. It’s a separate department from pediatrics, with specialists and equipment dedicated to newborns. Around here, only the university hospital where I work and the national hospital have one.”
“I see.”
Yumi-san gave me a slightly incredulous look.
“Listen, where you’re going to entrust your own precious child—you need to think this through a bit more. Why didn’t you even consult me in the first place?”
“Well… it was the hospital she found…”
“She’s already busy dealing with her own body! It’s the man’s job to cover that part, you fool!
A pickle from the sausage garnish flew at me. When I instinctively dodged—
“Don’t dodge, idiot!”
Another one came flying right after and hit me in the eye. … I had forgotten the iron rule: never dodge something Yumi-san throws.
“…Thank you, Yumi-san.”
She’s the type who just does whatever she wants without listening, and she’s rough, but deep down she’s kind, and what she says usually makes sense. Especially about the hospital—there was so much I wouldn’t have known if she hadn’t told me. So I thanked her while wiping my vinegar-stinging eye. The thought that Yumi-san might be at the same hospital kind of makes me feel a bit unsettled, but if I tell Miwa that someone I know recommended it, she’ll probably feel reassured.
“It’ll be fine. The university hospital has excellent staff. They do tend to prioritize experiments and research over treatment, though—but that’s just how university hospitals are.”
Yeah… it’ll be fine, right?
