As I set a glass of draft beer down, I also removed the ashtray in front of Hiro. Whatever the reason, if Yumi-san had quit smoking, there was no way Hiro would smoke around her. After seven years of knowing these siblings, you learn things like that. Sure enough, Hiro grumbled.
“She made me quit too. She barged into my room and threw out everything—my cigarettes, ashtrays, even lighters…”
Hiro lives with Yumi-san in their father's apartment. Yumi-san said matter-of-factly,
“When I do something, I do it thoroughly. In the first place, I quit smoking so the smell wouldn’t stick to my body. If you're smoking in the same house as me, that defeats the whole point.”
“So that’s the reason you quit smoking? I honestly thought you had finally started worrying about your health.”
Yumi-san snorted.
“As if I’d quit for a reason like that. My motto is: live hard, die young.” Besides, there’s no scientific evidence that smoking causes lung cancer. People are just dancing to the tune of anti-smokers.”
“…Really?”
“It’s just that they start with the conclusion. Only the data convenient for the loudest voices gets selectively exaggerated and publicized. It’s not like it’s actually been clearly proven or anything.”
“Huh.”
When a doctor-to-be says it, it somehow sounds convincing. Still, when someone whose motto is “live hard, die young” says it, I wonder how much I should believe.
“So what did you mean by the smell not sticking? Did your boyfriend point it out?”
Yumi-san let out a short laugh.
“If I had a boyfriend who said that to me, I’d kick his ass.”
…Figures.
“Actually, I was assigned to the pediatric ward this April. Apparently children—especially sick ones—are sensitive to smells. Even if you gargle and wash your hands properly, they can tell. So I decided to quit smoking. I’d hate to make them feel sick.”
“I see.”
Whatever else you might say about her, she takes her work seriously. I wouldn’t want to be this person’s brother or boyfriend, but maybe being her patient wouldn’t be so bad…Just as I thought that,
“Oh right, speaking of pediatrics!”
Yumi-san slammed her tumbler down on the coaster. Rum splashed everywhere, even hitting me and Hiro in the face.
“Pfft—Yumi-san, please handle the barware a little more carefully.”
“If it breaks, take it out of Ichii’s salary. But more importantly—”
More importantly? This is “MOSER” Bohemian glass—pretty expensive, actually.
“You had a shotgun wedding, right?”
“What?!”
So Hiro spilled it. When I looked, Hiro was averting his face from both of us, busily eating the sausage in front of him.
