One day, Hiro came into “Kohaku”, took one look at my face, and said,
“Ichii. Sorry.”
“For what?”
When I asked, he pointed toward the back.
The face peered out from behind Hiro, and I involuntarily let out a sound.
“Ugh.”
A decisively short haircut like a man’s, a slender figure one hundred seventy-three centimeters tall, and a fearless smile on a rarely seen androgynous beauty.
“Yumi-san…. It’s been a while.”
It was Hiro’s older sister.
When I glanced at Hiro, he had his hands pressed together as if to say sorry. For Hiro to apologize—this gives me a really bad feeling…
Yumi-san briskly sat down at the counter. Hiro sat beside her as if he were being pulled along by a collar. Yumi-san glared at me.
“Ichii. Didn’t you just go ‘ugh’ when you saw my face?”
I hurriedly said,
No, well… seeing you, Yumi-san, a sound of excitement just slipped out…
“Hmm.”
To Yumi-san, who still seemed suspicious, I quickly handed the menu.
“What would you like?”
“’Ronrico 151’.”
She ordered without even looking at the menu.
“Yes.”
“Ronrico 151” isn’t something you drink before dinner at six in the evening, but I served it without a word. If I talked back, who knows what might happen to me.
When I set out an ashtray, she waved her hand.
“Take it away.”
I looked at her, a little surprised. Yumi-san gave a small laugh.
“I’ve quit smoking.”
“What?”
A heavy smoker who used to go through more than forty cigarettes a day—what happened?
“Are you feeling unwell or something?”
“Idiot. Do I look like someone who’s sick?”
“…No, you don’t.”
Someone who’s sick wouldn’t down seventy-five–point-five proof rum in one gulp. Feeling something like relief and disappointment, I poured her another drink of “Ronrico”.
“Hiro?”
“Uh… beer for now.”
“You idiot.”
Yumi-san snapped instantly, but Hiro pretended not to hear. Maybe this is the only defense of a younger brother who has been snapped at for twenty years since he was born.
