The door closed behind me with a sound.
I will never come here again.
I remember crouching in front of this door like a stray dog just a month ago. What was I thinking then? What was I feeling? I do not know.
Saki’s words echo in my head again and again.
“Please make her and your child happy.”
That’s right. I have to make them happy. I have a family waiting for me. The family I had wanted so much…
But what is a family? What is happiness?
Saki. Can you be happy even without me? …No. I do not even have the right to ask such a thing. I know.
I walk aimlessly through the evening city.
As I move along the winding alley, memories come back in step with my pace.
The first night with Saki. The feel of those lips.
The days when we made love time after time, and yet as soon as it ended I wanted her again and waited eagerly for the next time.
And how I just struggled, not wanting to lose Saki.
“Goodbye.”
Saki said.
That was a word I should have said. I know. That the place I should return to is somewhere else. Not here. Saki showed me. So that I would not make a mistake again. I know.
But why is it so dark here…?
Before I knew it, I had come up to the bridge. Even though I was supposed to go to Miwa’s place again tonight, I had walked by mistake toward my own house.
Directly in front of me, the large shape of the museum rose against the orange sky.
Turning my back on it, I start walking again.
I think I have to move. I think I have to forget. With every moment, with every step.
If I did not do that, I felt as if I might be torn to pieces any second.
