When I became pregnant with Naoki’s child, I was nineteen. It was an age sufficient to be a parent, but at that time we could not see it that way. We thought we were still children, and we could not imagine being parents.

Even after “that” was discovered, Naoki and I were only at a loss and could make no decision, and time simply passed.

Morning sickness began while I was back home, and only then did my parents notice. They immediately ordered me to have an abortion. There was no way someone who was still a student could raise a child. Neither Naoki nor I could argue with them.

After we were thoroughly scolded, Naoki was sent away first, and I was taken to a hospital my parents had found. Because so much time had already passed, hospitalization was necessary. Severe mental and physical suffering awaited me. For five days I endured it alone. My parents did not come to see me even once except for the first day. But that too was only natural. “Shameful.” “Pathetic.” The words my parents hurled at me again and again were seared into my heart like a branding iron. When my parents saw me after I was discharged, they turned away as if they had touched something filthy. Yes. That was only natural. I was an irresponsible, foolish, sinful existence…

When I returned to university, Naoki welcomed me warmly. But when I saw his smile, I felt something close to shock. His attitude seemed as if nothing had happened. Perhaps that was Naoki’s way of being kind as best he could. Or perhaps he also wanted to forget as quickly as possible. I did not ask Naoki about it. I did not know how to put it into words. And maybe I thought that too—that with time it would surely disappear without leaving a trace.

After that Naoki and I continued seeing each other, but when our four years at university ended, our relationship came to an end as well.

I do not know whether the child had anything to do with our breakup.

Still, after I separated from Naoki, I began to think frequently about the child who had died. Was it a boy? Was it a girl? If the child were alive now, how old would it be?

And so my child continued to grow inside me as a vague shadow. This year the child would already be in elementary school. My gaze wanders among the children around me carrying randoseru. But no matter how closely I look, my child is not there. My child was killed by me and forced to remain a shadow forever. Until then Naoki had been able to stay beside it. But Naoki was gone. Time, and my own heart, drove him away.

What had I intended to do by separating my child from its father? Did I think Ichii would take his place? Ah, what was I thinking? That I was trying to make Ichii bear such a burden… Even Ichii could never love the shadow that lives inside me.

I recalled Ichii’s words once more.

“I can’t kill a child.”

If there had been even one person who could have given me those words seven years ago…

“That’s not it.”

I shook my head and pulled off Ichii’s ring.

It was I myself who decided to kill the child.

It was Ichii himself who chose to let the child live.

It was only natural that Ichii left me. For inside me there was nothing but the future of a dead child…

I stood up, opened the refrigerator, took out the box of chocolates, and threw it into the trash.

Then I looked at Ichii’s ring, silver and chocolate-colored. But I could not throw it away. I gently kissed it, put it back into the ring case, and placed it at the back of the bookcase as if to hide it.

I will never forget this.

I will never put this on again.

Ichii loved me.

I love Ichii.

I hope Ichii will forget me soon. Completely, without leaving even a shadow behind.

I remember Ichii. As if squinting toward the light, as if looking up…
