After leaving the hospital, I wove my way along the bottom of the office district. I found a deserted public space and sat on a bench. Miwa sat beside me.
I pressed my palms hard against my eyelids.
My thoughts turned to the inside of my jumper pocket. The photograph of the fetus. I had picked it up after it fell on the floor of the examination room earlier.
The pressure distorted my eyeballs and produced light. One. Then another. And they connected, gradually forming an image.
What did the doctor say? Right—the spine. The fetus’s spine.
—No. That’s not it. I didn’t know. I never thought it was like that. I had assumed… But that’s the same, isn’t it? The same as us, isn’t it?
“…can hear now too… the same way as in childbirth… labor is induced… a stillbirth report… buried… That’s the end of it.”
The doctor’s words returned in fragments.
My whole body was growing cold and heavy.
Before long I slipped into the dream that repeats again and again.
Someone is standing beyond the door.
They slowly turn around.
Then they go out. They never come back.
Alone in the darkness. A deep pain resurfaces.
No one looks back. No one protects you.
That’s why there’s nothing left but to hate. Fiercely. —More than anything, your own existence.
If only you hadn’t been so small, so weak, would they have turned back, would they have reached out a hand…?
Yes. Wasn’t that something I myself knew very well?
What it means to feel that no one needs you, what it means to be forgotten.
What was I trying to become, what was I trying to do?
My oath, my dream—what were they?
“Ichii…?”
When I lowered my trembling hands, Miwa was peering into my face anxiously.
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah…”
When I looked up, a heavy gray sky hung low, pressing down into the space between the buildings.
But inside me, a line of points of light still shone like an afterimage.
I held Miwa’s hand. It was small and hot like a child’s hand.
Miwa blinked several times as if the light was dazzling.
I took a breath and said,
“Miwa. Let’s get married.”
