The doctor scribbled something in the chart, then began tapping her pen against the desk. With that sound, I simply listened to their conversation.

“Well then, since you’re already past twelve weeks, it would be what’s called a mid-trimester abortion. We do those here too—do you want to have it done here?”

“Yes, please.”

“Alright, I’ll explain. A mid-trimester abortion is a procedure in which labor is induced with medication and the fetus is delivered. In other words, since the fetus has grown that much, it has to be delivered the same way as in childbirth.”

“Um… is it very painful?”

“Let’s see, we use anesthesia during the procedure, but before that there will be a short period of contractions. And starting the day before the procedure we do a treatment to dilate the cervix, and that can be quite uncomfortable. We insert more than ten laminaria tents to force it open. This process continues through the night.”

“Wow, that sounds painful… So does that mean it won’t be over in one day?”

“Of course. I told you—it’s the same as childbirth. The contractions themselves are shorter, though. You’ll be admitted the day before the procedure, and after it you’ll need to stay in the hospital for one to three days depending on how you recover. So be prepared for that.”

“Uh…”

“And then—”

The doctor opened a drawer, rummaged around, pulled out several sheets of paperwork, and plopped them down on the desk.

“This is the consent form for the abortion. Sign here. …Ah, you’re nineteen, right? Since you’re a minor we technically need a guardian’s consent as well—can you get your parents to sign?”

“My mother? That’s a bit…”

“Not possible? Well, in that case it’s fine. Just your signature and your partner’s will do.”

“Thank you.”

“The things you need to prepare for your stay in the hospital are written here. Once the procedure is over, you submit a stillbirth report to the local office, have the baby cremated, and then buried. That’s the end of it.”

“Buried? Does that mean we need a grave?”

“That isn’t decided. If you want, you can have a company we refer you to handle everything—from the paperwork at the local office to the burial.”

“Oh—yes, please.”

“In that case, including the procedure fee and the company’s services… it will cost about four hundred thousand yen. Is that alright?”

“Y-yes… it’s alright.”

Suddenly I lifted my head as if waking up. —Wait a second.

“…Then let’s schedule the procedure right away. The sooner the better.”

No—that’s not right. Wait a second.

“I’m fine anytime,” Miwa said.

“Alright. Then next week—”

“Wait, please.”

When I spoke, the doctor gave me a suspicious look through her glasses, as if she had forgotten I was there.

“What is it?”

“Could you wait a little on the procedure?”

“That’s fine, but you can’t take too long.”

“Um… I’d like to think about it a little more.”

Miwa turned toward me as if surprised. The doctor gave a small shrug.

“I see. Then the two of you should talk it over. Once you decide, come consult me again. Just keep in mind—after twenty-one weeks and six days, abortion is no longer possible.”

“I understand. Thank you.”

I bowed, urged Miwa along, and left the examination room. Miwa looked as if she wanted to say something, but in the end she followed me out in silence.
