“You’re the partner, correct?”
When I sat beside Miwa, a middle-aged female doctor said to me.
“Uh… yeah.”
Without waiting for my hesitant answer, the doctor put on the glasses she had pushed up on her forehead and looked down at the chart in her hand.
“Let’s see… you’re at sixteen weeks now. Since you’re entering mid-pregnancy, the morning sickness should settle down soon.”
Then she took out a black-and-white photograph.
“This is the ultrasound image we just took. Look here. Here’s the head, and you can see the hands and feet too.”
I looked where the doctor pointed with her ballpoint pen, uneasily. Miwa was looking at it silently as well.
Amid countless white lines falling from above, there was a hollow shaped like a black bean, and inside it a faint shadow could be seen. Right through the middle ran a line of points of light, clearly visible.
“This is the spine. It’s nicely formed, isn’t it? The length is still only eighteen centimeters, but the bones and the organs are all there already. You might start feeling the baby move before long. The baby can hear now too, so both the mother and father should talk to the baby often.”
I could feel my hands on my knees trembling slightly.
“We still can’t tell the sex. Looks like the baby’s being shy and hiding it.”
“Um…”
Miwa tried to say something, but whether the doctor heard her or not, she kept talking.
“About where you’ll give birth—like I mentioned before, we don’t handle deliveries here, so after twenty weeks you should reserve a maternity hospital. If you tell me where, I’ll write a referral.”
“Um…”
Miwa said again.
“Yes?”
“We’re not having the baby.”
“What? What did you say?”
At the sharp question, Miwa seemed to glance toward me in confusion, but I couldn’t move my gaze or react.
The doctor asked again.
“You’re not having it?”
“Yes,” Miwa answered.
“You’re aborting?”
“Yes.”
The doctor let out a sharp breath.
“Ah, you’re aborting. I see. …You should have told me that from the beginning.”
“I’m sorry.” Miwa gave a small bow.
