The second time I entered Miwa’s room, it was somewhat tidier than before, and seen that way, it was a girlish room, the furniture and fabrics all in pastel colors.
“Sorry for coming so early.”
I said it while staring at the steaming mug in front of me. Miwa, holding a flower-patterned cushion in front of her, shook her head.
Even though it was barely dawn, the heater was on so much that the room was warm enough to make me sweat. I thought Miwa must have been awake all night like me.
When I looked up, I caught sight of that thick mattress behind her and quickly averted my eyes.
“Listen…”
My voice came out hoarse, more than I expected. I hurriedly took a gulp of the tea in the cup. It was so hot I couldn’t taste it; the back of my mouth throbbed.
“Um…”
“Yeah.”
The quick smile Miwa showed as she raised her brows startled me. I was about to stand up, but for some reason the image of the “Ducati” came to mind, and I sat back down.
Damn it. Just get this over with. As if telling myself so, I pulled an envelope out of the jumper I was still wearing and set it on the table.
“There’s four hundred thirty thousand yen in here.”
Miwa looked puzzled.
“This should be enough, right?”
But her eyes still wandered in the empty space between us. So I had to add more words.
“Do you understand? …It’s for the hospital.”
“The hospital?”
“Yeah, the hospital. With this…” I couldn’t bring myself to say the word abortion. “Your body will go back to normal, right?”
“Back to normal…”
Miwa repeated it slowly.
I waited silently for the words to sink in.
That’s right. Back to normal. You, and me too—we can go back to normal with this. Let’s make it as if nothing ever happened. That’s best for everyone. Right?
The morning sun gradually shone through the thin curtain. Miwa’s face brightened little by little.
“You’ll pay for the abortion, Ichii?”
“Yeah. So you don’t have to worry about the cost. Take this and you can go to the hospital right away.”
Actually, I had saved this for moving expenses, but now it didn’t matter anymore.
Miwa’s fingers fidgeted with the decorative cord on the cushion cover.
“Actually, I was supposed to go to the hospital today… for a checkup. And they said that if I’m going to have an abortion, I have to give them my answer by today.”
“Then that works out.”
That works out? What am I saying?
Miwa tugged hard at the cord.
“Yeah, you’re right. That works out. Thank you, Ichii. …And there’s one more favor I’d like to ask…”
“What is it?” I felt like my voice sounded strangely hollow.
“I was hoping you might come to the hospital with me today, if you can… They said they need the man involved to sign the paperwork for the surgery. So…”
She furrowed her brows anxiously.
“Okay. I get it. Let’s go together now.”
I said that and pushed the envelope of cash back into my jumper pocket.
“Thank you so much, Ichii.”
Miwa said it again. She even bowed her head.
Damn it. Don’t bow your head like that.
