In the cold air still holding the darkness of night, I ride the bike. The city between night and morning strangely has no shadows, flat and without depth.
The deep red body of the “Ducati” cuts through the bluish-white glowing mist, its water-cooled four-stroke engine beating like a giant heart as it follows roads I don’t know, crossing signal after signal flashing in the dawn.
I shoot straight across the X-shaped overpass stretching through the air, where several railway tracks and pedestrian paths cross above and below, then turn left at the Y-shaped junction beyond it and cross to the other side of the national highway.
The district that survived the air raids has old roads and houses intricately tangled together. The bike sways right and left, threading through turn after turn, going deeper and deeper.
After turning at the slightly tilted convex mirror, I cut the engine and took off my helmet.
Still straddling the “Ducati”, I looked at the building at the end of the alley, somewhat bewildered.
I came all the way to Miwa’s apartment at this hour before dawn without even calling—what was I planning to do?
No—I hadn’t thought I would actually make it here.
I probably just wanted to ride along the empty roads. As if fleeing from something. And to disguise that, I merely set a vague provisional destination.
But the “Ducati” had brought me to that set point almost too faithfully.
—Hey, what am I supposed to do now?
—And is this really Miwa’s apartment?
The “Ducati” remained silent, pretending not to know.
Just as I gave up and was about to start the engine again, as if answering those two questions, a curtain on the first floor of the apartment opened slightly, and a small face peered out.
A yellow curtain. And yellow hair.
I looked down once, exhaled a large cloud of white breath, then made up my mind and got off the bike. I checked the inner pocket of my jumper. Then, with the “Ducati” behind me, I started walking.
