During my shift from 5:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., if it isn’t too busy, I’m given two breaks. The first is usually thirty minutes starting around nine, when they serve a light dinner in the kitchen.

The second is about fifteen minutes around eleven. Recently, I make it a point to call Saki during this break. Before, I used to worry that she might already be asleep or that I might be bothering her, so I only sent messages. But when I asked her about it, she said, “I want to talk with you too, Ichii,” so since then I’ve been calling her almost every night.

She usually picks up after just one ring, but tonight she answered on the fifth. Even something that trivial makes my chest stir strangely. I can’t help asking.

“Uh… were you in the middle of something a moment ago?”

“I was just changing. I’m already in bed, so it’s fine.”

“Oh. That’s fine… then.”

Even as I say that, I strain to listen to the sounds behind her. It’s a moment when I dislike myself. Was I really such a jealous guy?

We talk every day, so there isn’t any special topic. Just like when we’re together, I usually talk and Saki listens. About the piece I’m working on, topics online, work—whatever comes to mind. I briefly remembered the pink suit from earlier, but of course I had no intention of wasting this precious time on that one.

I told her about a book I’d bought.

“Earlier today, a book called “Denbei Obsession” arrived. It’s short, so I finished it during my last break.”

“Denbei? Do you mean Shoami Denbei?”

As expected, that was quick.

“Yeah. Shoami Denbei—the originator of mokume-gane. It’s fiction, but it’s modeled on a real metal craftsman. He was from Akita, like Denbei. After years of research, he finally succeeded in reproducing mokume-gane.”

“Isn’t it Professor Myoko?”

“Yeah. You know him?”

“Yes. He’s famous for stainless steel art, but he’s also made major contributions in mokume-gane. Actually, we asked him to exhibit at the recent mokume-gane exhibition, but in the end it didn’t work out. It was only a small-scale exhibition, and the preparation period was short…”

“Oh. I saw some images of his work online, but I’d really like to see the real thing with my own eyes.”

“I hear several pieces are in a museum in Akita.”

“I want to go see them someday.”

“I’d like to see them too.”

“Really? Then when spring comes, want to go to Akita together?”

“That sounds wonderful.”

My voice rose without my meaning it to, out of happiness.

“Then let’s stay a night while we’re at it. We can rent a car and go around to different places.”

After that, we talked about the Akita trip, and fifteen minutes passed in no time.

“We can’t meet tomorrow, Wednesday, right?”

“Yeah… I’ll be on a business trip for three days starting tomorrow.”

“So that means we can’t see each other until Sunday after all?”

“I’m sorry.”

“It can’t be helped. It’s work.”

I really wanted to see if I could come over Saturday night. But by the time my shift ended, it would be after two in the morning. I couldn’t ask her to push herself when she’d be tired after her trip.

Saki said, as if to lift my spirits.

“Next Sunday I’m off too, so we can take it easy. And it’s Valentine’s Day. I’ll have chocolate ready and wait for you.”

“Wait—don’t tell me it’s handmade?”

“I was planning to buy it… Would you prefer handmade?”

“No, I was just thinking I’d better bring some medicine for my stomach.”

“How rude.”

And we laughed together.

“By the way, there’s something I want to talk to you about too when I see you.”

“What is it?”

“It’s nothing major.”

“Then we’ll talk about it Sunday.”

“Yeah, Sunday.”

And we ended the call.
