第八章 バカラ・オビエド（３）
今年のクリスマスイヴは木曜日なので、その一日前に私とイチイは会った。私のマンションで、イチイが作ってくれた料理を食べ、イチイが持ってきたシャンパンで乾杯した。
私はシャンパンのラベルを読んだ。
「〈ラ・グランダム〉」
「〈ヴーヴ・クリコ〉だよ」
「〈ヴーヴ・クリコ〉って、もっと黄色いラベルじゃなかったっけ」
「それは〈イエロー・ラベル〉だよ。色々なヴィンテージのものをブレンドしているやつさ。その中でもできのよかった年の、特級と一級の畑のブドウだけで作られるのが〈ヴィンテージ・ラベル〉で、〈ラ・グランダム〉はさらにその中の特級畑のものだけで作られているんだ」
「じゃあ、すごく高級なのね」
そう言われるとなんだかより美味しく感じるから不思議だ。
「まあ一本二万円はするね」
「えぇっ？」
私は驚いてグラスの中の金色の飲み物を眺めた。すると一杯いくらになるんだろうという、あさましい考えがよぎる。
イチイはちょっと得意そうに笑った。
「実は店のつてで半額で譲ってもらったんだけどね。どうしてもこれをサキに飲ませてやりたくて」
「ありがとう」
「ラ・グランダムって、〈偉大な女性〉っていう意味なんだ」
「ふうん」
「それから、これ……」
イチイがとり出したのはリングケースで、開けてみると二色の模様が入った指輪が入っていた。
「あ、これって、もしかして？」
イチイは照れ笑いをした。
「俺の手作り。杢目金を真似しようと思ってさ。銀と銅の二枚しか板を重ねられなかったし、うちには加熱炉がなくてバーナーで溶接したから、そんなにきれいにはならなかったけど……」
指輪は、銀をベースに淡いオレンジ色が、まるで墨流しのようにマーブル状の模様を描いていた。
「サキのサイズは、七号だよね」
それは薬指のサイズだ。私は右の薬指に指輪をはめた。ぴったりだった。そしてそれをじっと見つめた。
イチイが急いで言った。
「次にもっと上手くできたら、またプレゼントするよ」
「ううん、とってもきれい。大事にするね」
私はそれしか言えなかった。イチイの気持ちが凝縮されて私の指の上で光っていた。
私がイチイにあげたのは〈バカラ〉の灰皿だった。分厚いクリスタルガラス製で花がパッと大きく咲いたような八角の形をしている。
イチイはとても喜んでいた。
「タンブラーと灰皿、どっちにするか迷ったんだけど」
「すごく嬉しいよ。クリスタルは大好きだから」
「前にそう言っていたものね」
イチイは私をぎゅっと抱きしめた。
「俺の言葉を覚えていてくれて、ありがとう」
私はイチイの輝く瞳を見た。その光の照り返しが、私にも感じられた。もしかすると、こうして少しずつイチイの光が私の中に沁みとおって、いつかあの白くて冷たい場所をも溶かしてくれるかも知れない。そんなふうにも思えた。
「大好きよ、イチイ」
私は、今の私にとって精いっぱいの言葉を言った。
イチイは、俺も、と言って私にキスをした。
This year, Christmas Eve fell on a Thursday, so Ichii and I met the day before. At my apartment, we ate the food he cooked and toasted with the champagne he brought.
I read the label on the bottle.
“'La Grande Dame.'”
“It’s ‘Veuve Clicquot’.”
“Isn’t ‘Veuve Clicquot’ usually a yellow label?”
“That’s ‘the Yellow Label’. It’s a blend of different vintages. ‘The Vintage Label’ uses only grapes from the best years, from grand cru and premier cru vineyards. ‘La Grande Dame’ is made only from grand cru grapes.”
“So it’s really expensive.”
Somehow, hearing that made it taste even better.
“About twenty thousand yen a bottle.”
“What?”
I stared at the golden liquid in my glass in surprise, briefly wondering how much each pour must be worth.
Ichii smiled, looking a little proud.
“I got it for half price through the bar. I really wanted you to try this, Saki.”
“Thank you.”
“La Grande Dame means ‘great lady,’ you know.”
“Hm.”
“And then—this.”
Ichii took out a ring case. Inside was a ring with a two-toned pattern.
“Oh—wait. Is this…?”
Ichii smiled shyly.
“I made it myself. I tried to imitate mokume-gane, but I could only layer silver and copper, and since I don’t have a furnace and had to weld it with a burner, it didn’t turn out as clean as I’d hoped…”
The ring was silver at its base, with pale orange marbling drifting through it, like ink floating on water.
“Your size is seven, right?”
That was my ring finger. I slipped it onto my right hand. It fit perfectly. I gazed at it.
Ichii hurried to say,
“If I can make a better one next time, I’ll give it to you.”
“No—it’s really beautiful. I’ll take good care of it.”
That was all I could say. All of Ichii’s love was gathered there, shining on my finger.
What I gave Ichii was a Baccarat ashtray. Made of thick crystal, it was octagonal, like a flower in full bloom.
Ichii looked genuinely pleased.
“I couldn’t decide whether to get a tumbler or an ashtray.”
“I’m really happy. I’m very fond of crystal.”
“You said that before.”
Ichii pulled me close and held me tight.
“Thank you for remembering the things I say.”
I looked into his shining eyes. I felt the light reflected there reach me as well. Maybe this was how Ichii’s light would slowly seep into me, and someday even melt that cold, white place inside.
“I really care about you, Ichii.”
Those were the strongest words I could bring myself to say.
Ichii said, “Me too,” and kissed me.
