“I wanted you to at least comfort me, but you’d just started working and seemed busy, and when I did call, you’d happily tell me about your job, and it only made it harder and harder for me, and when I thought, in the end, you didn’t understand me either, I couldn’t even stand hearing your voice anymore, and… that’s why I said what I did…”
I kept staring at his hand resting on mine. His fingers were slender and delicate, their well-shaped nails fitting them perfectly. His beautiful hands had been one of the things I loved. Why are men’s hands all so different, each one in its own way… I found myself thinking.
“…But right after we broke up, I regretted it. I realized I needed you.”
I’d wanted you all along too.
“So… maybe we could get back together? I’ve got a proper job now, and my work’s been going well. But something’s missing. And it’s you. I won’t make that mistake again. Even after seven years apart, I still feel this much for you. Time has taught me what’s real. …I love you.”
Naoki’s words struck me. What time teaches… what passes, what comes, and what remains.
I smiled and squeezed his hand in return. Naoki smiled, looking pleased. Yes—this is it, the reason I came here.
“Naoki… do you remember? Our child?”
His face stiffened. I went on.
“I just can’t forget what happened. That child is still inside me. I can feel it. I think it will stay that way for the rest of my life. Time has taught me that too, over these seven years. We killed our child. And that sin will never go away.”
As Naoki tried to pull away, I held onto his hand.
“We mustn’t forget, Naoki. What it is we did. There are things in this world that must not be forgotten, no matter how painful, how unbearable it is. …I learned that from someone.”
Naoki looked at me, suddenly.
“That must be… a man.”
I couldn’t help but smile. That same keen intuition of his felt comforting. And I loosened my grip.
“Yes. A man. He’s no longer in my life, but I still love him.”
Saying it out loud, I realize it all over again. I love Ichii. Still… this much.
