Naoki gently withdrew his hand from mine and laced his fingers together on the counter. Under the dim light, he spoke slowly. His voice blended into the piano in the background…
“I see, Saki. I love you. But you love someone else. We’re going in circles. …Right. I didn’t know you’d been carrying that all this time. Maybe I really was only thinking about myself.”
“No… I’m the one who never even tried to understand your pain. I’m sorry.”
Naoki drained his pastis.
“Still—I’m glad we got to see each other today. Thank you.”
“Me too… I feel like I’ve finally found a sense of closure.”
“Goodbye. Take care.”
“Goodbye.”
Holding the bill, Naoki walked away slowly. Without once looking back.
I watched his retreating figure until the very end. Until the door closed shut.
Alone at the counter, I listened intently.
A new song had begun.
A female singer’s strong, beautiful voice filled the air.
It was a song of a “seed” and a “flower.”
A song of a “flower” blooming from a “seed” buried in a cold place.
What is love?
What does it mean to live?
I’ve done nothing but be afraid. …Even now, I am afraid.
And yet, I have no choice but to live. I have no choice but to love. Even as I continue to make mistakes.
The seasons come around again and again, but the same “time” never returns.
At last, I’ve come to understand that.
Where are you now?
What kind of time are you living?
When the “time” of spring comes, flowers bloom of their own accord.
Even if the one who buried the seed is gone…
