I believed I understood what it means, for someone who aims to be an artist, to win a prize in a competition—how much it is longed for. Beauty is born from the fierce inner conflict and struggle within oneself. Art is the artist’s soul cut into visible form, and the process of creating it is an unimaginably solitary task—one no one can help with. After going through such suffering and completing a work, what the artist desires next is for others to recognize their work. This is because the artist has lived in deep solitude for so long, and because no human being can endure solitude forever. And the artist, more than most, possesses an abundance of what makes us human.
Naoki spoke modestly, but having seen how he struggled and strained to create a single work, I could easily imagine how much joy must be welling up within him.
“I’m really glad for you, Naoki. I’m so happy too…”
Even saying it a hundred times wouldn’t be enough. Congratulations, Naoki.
His face was bright, glowing with confidence.
“Thank you. The results just came in the day before yesterday. I haven’t even told Kai yet. I wanted you to be the first to know…”
I didn’t know how to respond, and simply looked at him. Naoki brushed his bangs back with his long fingers, then adjusted his coaster slightly. And then I remembered again. I had loved these nervous gestures of his so much.
“…Saki, are you seeing anyone right now?”
“Why?”
I couldn’t help asking. Why now—why would you ask me something like that?
Naoki let out a quiet sigh, just loud enough to be heard.
“Sorry. I don’t really have the right to ask you something like that, do I?”
The right?
“It’s nothing… I’m not seeing anyone. Unfortunately. I guess you could say my work is my partner right now.”
I answered as brightly as I could.
Just stop, Naoki. This is pointless. The reason I decided to see you today was—
And yet, I found myself listening to his words as if spellbound.
