I spoke in a forced brisk tone.

“Well, when you’re working, there are plenty of difficult things. And I’ve just started a new project, so I might be a little tired. Naoki, teaching high school students must take a lot out of you too, right?”

Naoki rolled a green olive lightly on the plate with his fork.

“Classes aren’t really that hard. My school is one of those refined girls’ schools—no troublesome students—and since it’s an integrated system up through university, it’s relaxed. …I’m pretty popular with the students. I’ve never been beaten by any other teacher in the number of chocolates I get on Valentine’s Day.””

He gave a soft laugh.

I drew in a breath.

“I see. Then maybe teaching actually suits you.”

“No way. Like I said, it’s just something I have to do. A means to get by.””

I said nothing. Naoki’s parents ran a large traditional restaurant, and his family home was a spacious mansion in a high-end residential area in the capital. The business had been taken over by his sister’s husband.

Naoki went on.

“Have you heard of the ‘Mizunomori Sculpture Competition’? It’s been held by the capital for about ten years now. Every year, they select one outdoor sculpture through an open call to be placed in a park called Mizunomori. It’s organized by the local government, but several well-known artists serve as judges, so it’s fairly well known. …And this year, my work was chosen for the grand prize.”

I looked up in surprise.

“Really?”

Naoki smiled.

“It’s true. …Surprised?”

“Yeah… But really, really—congratulations.”

I held my breath, savoring the feeling for a while. Naoki—that Naoki—had finally won a prize in a competition, and even taken the grand prize…

Naoki had majored in sculpture. Contrary to his delicate appearance, many of his works were large pieces defined by bold, powerful lines. Just as I loved Naoki, I loved his work, his talent. Naoki and his talent were one, inseparable.
