“Did you know I teach art at a high school?”
I stepped away from the after-party group and, at the counter of a quiet bar, listened to Naoki’s voice.
“Yeah… I heard from Kai.”
Naoki smiled softly.
Ah… he had always been like this. I remembered. He never raises his voice, choosing each word one by one, speaking as if pushing them out.
“I had to start working eventually. But I didn’t want to be a homeroom teacher, so I’ve stayed on as a contract teacher. …Are you still at the museum, Saki?”
“Yeah.”
“I see. You wanted to be a curator even when you were in school.”
Naoki took a small sip of the cloudy white liquor. The faint scent of star anise drifted to me. I also brought my glass to my lips. It was a rose-colored cocktail. I waited patiently until he found his next words. If the subject was changed or he was interrupted midway, Naoki would immediately lose his words. It hadn’t even been thirty minutes since I had reunited with Naoki after seven years, and yet I remembered so clearly how to speak with him and carried it out naturally—I was surprised at myself. Something I had done almost every day for four years had apparently settled into me more than I realized.
After a while, Naoki spoke again.
“I was happy… when I heard from Kai that you were coming this year.”
“Happy?”
I found myself asking.
“Yeah. It’s just that I hadn’t seen you for seven years.”
I looked intently at Naoki’s face. He smiled.
“I had been imagining all kinds of things about how you might be, but…”
My heart gave a jolt. “But…?”
“…You’ve changed a little.”
“In what way?”
Naoki kept his eyes on me.
“You’ve become more beautiful. …And, how should I put it, a little… lonely, maybe.”
I looked away and gave a light laugh. Instead of crying. Naoki, you haven’t changed at all. Things like the way you unsettle people’s hearts, every time.
