“Exactly. We’d like to include artists like them who create using Edo techniques. That exhibition was quite well received, so it left a good impression on both the prefecture and the management company. Initially, the plan was limited to Edo-period works, but we figured that including contemporary pieces might help attract more visitors.”
“And the prices for those pieces are more reasonable, too.”
Yoshino gave a soft laugh. She understood. Artworks with age behind them are bound to be expensive. Without pieces that make people think, “Maybe I could afford this,” the phrase ‘Closer to You’ would ring hollow.
“Okay. We’ll take a positive look at it on our end. Can I take this proposal with me?”
“Of course.”
Originally, I had planned to hand copies to everyone at the reunion, but when I told Kai, he said, “If you give them to me beforehand, I’ll send them out before the reunion—that’ll be quicker.” So he ended up taking care of all of them except Yoshino’s. True, no one wants to listen to a long explanation of a project over drinks. And anyone interested in exhibiting would need to have a proper meeting with me later anyway.
“Are you going to the after-party, Saki? I’ve got somewhere to be, so I’m heading out.”
Yoshino asked as she slipped the proposal into her bag.
“Somewhere to be? Work?”
“No. Actually, I’m having dinner with his parents. I wanted to reschedule, but we just couldn’t make any other day work.”
Yoshino has a fiancé; they’re planning to get married next spring.
“I see…”
Kai was going around asking who’d be coming to the after-party. What should I do? Maybe I’ll go. I came all this way, and I’ve already got a hotel here for the night. If I go back now, I’ll just sleep.
Just then, someone called out from behind me.
“Saki. Long time no see.”
The moment I heard his voice, my head spun.
I turned around slowly. A pair of single-lidded eyes, half-hidden behind long bangs, smiled gently.
I was so shaken that I could barely respond to Yoshino’s goodbye. I thought I was ready…
Standing there was Naoki—the other hidden reason I had decided to come here.
