After Kai got up again for something else, Yoshino glanced over the list he had brought.

“Oh? This person—isn’t he a famous ukiyo-e collector? I hear he never lets it out anywhere.”

“I hear he’s an old friend of Kai’s father. He’s agreed to let us exhibit a few pieces this time, though not for sale.”

“Wow. You’d expect nothing less from a long-established gallery.”

Yoshino carefully went over the exhibition conditions.

“For items for sale: no exhibition honorarium; the exhibitor covers the insurance; the museum covers transport and catalog production. And what about the museum’s cut on sales?”

“None.”

Yoshino grinned.

“Not a bad set of terms. These days, every shop has one or two items gathering dust. Given their value, it’s hard to discount them much. Being able to display them in a reputable museum, and even sell them without paying a booth fee—that’s appealing. Even if they don’t sell right away, being exhibited in a museum and listed in a catalog is good publicity too.”

“Of course, they have to be proper artworks. And we’ll need to review them in advance before deciding whether to exhibit them, though.”

“I know that.”

Yoshino’s hand stopped as she turned the pages—it was a list of works from Kai’s shop.

“What’s this—‘modern woodblock prints’? Isn’t this supposed to be an Edo-period exhibition?”

I answered, as if I had been waiting for that question.

“You know the theme—‘The Living Beauty of Edo,’ right? That means we’re also including contemporary works made using Edo-period techniques. These woodblock prints are created by artisans who carry forward the techniques of ukiyo-e.”

Yoshino gave a quick nod.

“I see. Like the mokume-gane artists we introduced before.”

All the contemporary artists who exhibited in ‘Small-Scale Exhibition: The Beauty of Mokume-gane,’ which I had been in charge of before, had been introduced to me through Yoshino’s shop.
