“About half of Kai’s ukiyo-e pieces are also for sale. The sub-theme this time is ‘Bringing Beauty Closer to You,’ and part of the appeal is that some of the pieces on display can actually be purchased. It’s not just shop items, but actual works on display that the general public can buy—that’s the key.”

Yoshino’s eyes lit up at once.

“That sounds like a pretty interesting idea. There are all sorts of art fairs with works for sale, but for a museum—especially a public one—to plan something like that is pretty unusual.”

I took the proposal out of my bag.

“Even though we’re a public museum, the entire operation—including the curatorial side—is run by a private designated management company. Holding an exhibition requires their approval. I came up with this plan, but they marked it up heavily—revising the concept and the financial projections—before finally approving it.”

The initial idea for this plan came from me, but Takaya built its framework, and Yuuri, who joined later, helped a great deal to flesh it out. Since this was effectively the first independent project after the introduction of the designated management system—and the real first step in rebuilding the prefectural museum—it wasn’t just me—Takaya and Yuuri too—who were putting in no ordinary amount of effort.

Yoshino took the proposal and read it closely.

“So, two domestic museums, and then private collectors and companies… There are still quite a few blanks here. Are you going to start reaching out now?”

“Yes. To be honest, I was thinking of talking to everyone here at the reunion.”

That was it—one of the reasons I had finally decided to attend: to expand my network in the art world. Among my old classmates from the art university, some, like Yoshino and Kai, worked at shops that dealt in artworks, while others were themselves involved in design or production.Even those who weren’t directly involved tended to have some connection to the field through friends or acquaintances. A new project needs new connections. That was because I felt it keenly.

Then Kai came back.

“Sorry to keep you waiting, Saki. I’ve put together a list,” he said, handing me several sheets of paper.

“This is a list of owners who might have pieces suitable for exhibition. Their contact details are included. And here are the types of works they’re likely to have.”

About twenty names—individuals and shops—were listed, with notes such as “ceramics,” “hanging scrolls,” and “glassware” written beside them. I looked at Kai in surprise.

“That many?”

Kai sat down next to me with a smile.

“There might be a few more I can add. They’re people I know, along with some my father knows—and I just had those guys over there jot down a couple of names too,” he said, pointing behind him.

“I’ve noted who referred you to them, so when you contact them, drop that name—it’ll go more smoothly. I’ve already given them a heads-up.”

“Thank you so much, Kai.”

“Ha, it’s nothing. If anything else comes up, just let me know. I’ll help as much as I can.”
