Yoshino lit another cigarette. Smoke rose slowly. It was just a little similar—the scent… a sweet, nostalgic fragrance like dried grass…
“Well, there are times like that, you know. I’m kind of a believer in fate. You meet the person you’re meant to meet when you’re meant to meet them—because it’s meant to be. If it feels like there’s no one, it’s just because it’s not that time yet.”
The unspoken meaning in Yoshino’s tone seeped deep into my heart. I remembered calling Yoshino in tears after I broke up with Ichii, and how she had listened to me for hours. Even now, nearly three years later, she knew I was still carrying what had happened between us with me. She knew it, and yet she didn’t say what didn’t need to be said. Kai, Yoshino—why are all my friends so kind? And they understand that there are many things in life that cannot be helped. So they don’t say anything. Just smile and drink together in a gentle mood.
I smiled back at Yoshino, and then raised my sake cup to my lips.
Fate… Is there someone else who is meant for me? To meet is fate. Not to meet is also fate. And to leave is also fate…
“By the way, what was that thing you said you wanted to talk to me about in your email? I was sure it was about love, but I guess not.”
Yoshino said, putting out her cigarette. I came back to myself right away.
“Yeah. Actually, we’re going to hold an exhibition at our museum called ‘The Living Beauty of Edo.’ It covers everything from the Edo period—ukiyo-e, kimono, everyday items—pretty much anything. So I was wondering if you might be willing to lend us any suitable pieces from your shop. I’ve asked Kai as well, and he’s agreed to provide several ukiyo-e prints.”
Yoshino popped a plump piece of grilled fugu milt into her mouth and swallowed.
“Edo-period items, huh. Hmm… there might be some maki-e works by Kōetsu or Kōrin at the main store—the president’s into that sort of thing. And there are also things like inrō and netsuke, but those are for sale…”
I leaned forward.
“If possible, I’d like you to include those as well.”
“What?”
Yoshino looked a little surprised.
