The car wove between university campuses scattered around, crossed another large bridge on the opposite side of the museum, and cut straight through the center of the city, ablaze with countless lights.
Yuuri was saying something to me.
“Sorry—what was that?”
“Would you like to go out for a drink together sometime?”
“Yeah…”
As if I had lost my judgment, I gave a vague reply. For the past two and a half years, I had avoided even going to the entertainment district at night. But what did that even mean? I’m the only one imagining things and going in circles…
“We’re here.”
When I looked up at his words, we were in front of my apartment building.
“Thank you very much.”
As I opened the door, he called out,
“Saki-san.”
“Yes?”
Yuuri tilted his head slightly and smiled at me.
“Please don’t forget our promise.”
“Promise…”
“The one about going out for a drink together.”
I repeated the words over and over in my head. Promise. Promise. Go out for a drink. Go out for a drink. What does that even mean? It means nothing.
At last, I focused on the face before me. I forced a smile. Yes, I can do it.
“Yes. Once work settles down, I’d like to.”
Then I got out.
As the air in the room circulated through the air conditioner, I pressed my forehead against the glass of the bookcase. I think of the ring inside, but I do not pick it up. I have not polished it for a long time, so it has probably gone completely dull. But that is fine. That’s what time does.
The glass clouds and clears again and again with my breath.
I am still alive. Even if it means nothing.
Without collapsing, unable to take a step, even if I can only stand there.
I will simply live. Because I’ve decided…
