“Have you gotten used to this town yet?”
Instead of asking why he knew where I lived, I asked.
“Hmm… not really yet. I haven’t seen much outside this area. I’ve gone to the entertainment district alone a couple of times to drink, though…”
“I’m sorry, we haven’t even had a welcome party for you yet.”
Yuuri was not just a temporary helper; he had become a member of the museum as a dispatch from the management company. The management company had seized the opportunity presented by the contract employee position that the prefecture had been dragging its feet on recruiting for. His salary must have been nowhere near what he had earned before, but Yuuri did not seem to mind.
“This, too, is valuable experience as a curator. And if we can turn this museum around, the company plans to give a bonus.”
He said it with a smile.
“We’re really lucky you came here, Yuuri-san. Your work is very careful and quick, too.”
I meant that sincerely.
“I’m glad to hear that. I don’t know anyone in this town, so I have nothing to do and end up working even on my days off.”
As I listened to Yuuri’s bright voice, I kept glancing out the window again and again. Even when I tried to stop, my gaze would drift back there on its own.
Ah… it’s almost here—what should I do? Those words swirled in my mind. Once we turned the next curve—we would pass the place I had avoided all this time—Ichii’s home. And on top of that, it was Wednesday!
My heart hammered, and my eyes searched through the darkness. Ichii might be home on his day off. The workbench where he always sat is by the window—his silhouette might be visible beyond the lit curtain. It was humid tonight; he might have the window open. He might be just taking a break from his work and smoking while looking outside. Then—then…
The road curves in a wide arc. We pass a tall, thick tree. I lean my face as close as I can to the window.
A stark white light hit my eyes.
—Ichii’s house was gone—without a trace. The ground was paved with asphalt, and a few cars were dotted here and there. It had become a paid monthly parking lot.
The car passed by in an instant without changing speed. He must have found it odd, the way I was twisting around, because Yuuri asked,
“What’s wrong? Did something happen?”
“…No, nothing.” Nothing. Nothing.
I straightened my posture and almost laughed. There’s nothing—of course there isn’t… Ichii had moved. To a new home with his family. Probably long, long ago…
