“Good evening.”
By the time I passed the security office and greeted them, it was already past ten-thirty.
The moment I stepped outside, I was enveloped in the muggy night air. The area around the museum had a lot of greenery and was close to a river, so even in summer it was relatively comfortable, but tonight there was no wind, and although it was a break in the rainy season, the air was thick and humid, and after just a short walk I was already starting to sweat lightly.
I shifted the heavy bag on my shoulder and let out a breath. As I was doing a final check of the report, making copies of the required number, and binding them, it had gotten this late. Tomorrow was a day Nezu wouldn’t be at the museum, so I had to stop by the prefectural office before work to deliver this. Even if Nezu’s stamp could not be obtained in time, I at least had to make sure the Cultural Affairs Division knew that the deadline had been met. By now, they understood our situation and would accept the section chief’s stamp even afterward.
In the end, I couldn’t get to the catalog manuscript for the joint exhibition. I had brought it with me, but whether I’d be able to read it after I got home was doubtful. I felt foggy, and I was worried I might overlook something. Still, since Yuuri had completed it much earlier than scheduled, it should be fine to check it from tomorrow onward.
I looked up at the intersection leading to the bus stop. It was already that time when the signal blinked red. The last bus had already left. I planned to cross the bridge to the side of town with more traffic and catch a taxi. I could buy food at the convenience store on the first floor of my apartment building.
As I was about to step onto the crosswalk, a car pulled up smoothly on my right, and the window opened, making me flinch.
“Saki-san.”
It was Yuuri.
“Let me take you home.”
I hesitated for a moment, but I was too tired to even think about choosing my words, so I thanked him and got in.
Yuuri pulled off immediately and turned right instead of going toward the bus stop.
“Um… my place…”
Yuuri smiled slightly.
“I know where it is. This way is a shortcut.”
That was true by car, so I couldn’t argue with that.
