Among the matters that required the section chief’s approval, I selected only the most urgent ones, but even so, when I arrived at the prefectural office ten minutes before six, my arms felt like they were about to give out from the weight of the paper bags crammed with documents. The entrance for the general public was already closed, so I went in through the staff entrance and sat on a sofa in the empty lobby, waiting quietly.

Six twenty. At last, Nezu came out of the elevator. He approached in quick, fussy steps.

“Have you been waiting long?”

I stood up, holding the paper bags.

“No.”

“Then let’s go.”

I thought he would head back to the elevator, but he went toward the staff entrance, and I was surprised.

“Um, Nezu-kachō—where are we going?”

Even as I spoke, he kept walking ahead, then glanced back.

“The Cultural Affairs Division’s already been locked up. The Gender Equality Promotion Division is still open, but we can’t just use another department’s meeting room. There’s a place I usually go to nearby—let’s talk over dinner. Don’t worry, I’ll put it down as expenses.”

“...All right.”

The place he frequented was a Japanese restaurant that looked high-end, about a ten-minute walk from the prefectural office. We were shown to a private room, and as Nezu sat cross-legged on a cushion, he promptly ordered a bottle of beer.

“What will you have?”

“No, thank you.”

As I stacked the document files on the table, I replied a little irritably. This wasn’t the time to be drinking.

But without paying much attention to what I’d said, Nezu said, “Two glasses,” and ordered sashimi, grilled dishes, and various others. I decided it didn’t matter anymore and stopped speaking up.

“Well then, cheers.”

He drank the beer I poured with clear enjoyment. Ignoring his now nearly empty glass, I said,

“Now then, Nezu-kachō. The first matter—this is the list of equipment to be purchased this fiscal year.”

I spread out the documents. He poured himself another glass and, to my surprise, said,

“I’ll leave all of that to you. Just handle it as you see fit.”

“What? But there are several options, and prices differ depending on performance, and there’s also choosing the vendor…”

He waved his chopsticks with a piece of whale sashimi in them.

“So take all that into account and use your judgment. I’m not a curator to begin with. I don’t understand the inside of a museum at all. How am I supposed to make any decisions in that situation?”

Isn’t that your job…

“Then we may decide everything on our side?”

“Yes, please.”

“We need your seal to submit it to accounting…”

He asked the server who had brought the tempura platter for another beer, then turned back to me.

“Of course, I know that. Once everything is decided, lay it out on my desk. Leave it with the stamp spaces on top.”

“…Understood.”
