第十四章 ザ・ローズ（７）
ネヅが新聞を読み終わったのを見計らって、私は近づいた。
「ネヅ課長、ちょっとお話があるのですが」
「ん、なんだね？」
見上げたネヅのメガネ奥の小さな目は特に機嫌が悪そうでもなかったので、私は安堵した。
「お忙しいのは分かっておりますが、今後の美術館運営について課長に色々とご相談したいことがあるので、少しお時間をとっていただきたいのですが。……あの、お昼を食べながらでも結構ですので」
そうつけ加えたのは、すでに十二時五分前になっていたからだ。ネヅは昼食時間を遅らせたことはない。ネヅは眉を上げた。
「相談？ そうか……。しかし、これから県庁に戻らなきゃならんのだ。午後一番で男女共同参画審議会の会議が入っている。俺が司会を務めるから遅れるわけにはいかない」
「そうですか……」
私はガッカリした。
「……しかし夕方以降なら時間がとれるぞ」
「え、本当ですか」
ネヅは手帳を繰った。
「六時はどうだ？」
この際贅沢は言っていられないので、私は「結構です」と答えた。
ネヅはパタンと手帳を閉じてニッコリした。
「よし。じゃあ県庁の一階ロビーで待ち合わせよう」
「はい、課長。よろしくお願いします」
私は頭を下げた。
Once Nezu had finished reading the newspaper, I approached him.
“Nezu-kachō, I have something I’d like to discuss with you.”
“Hmm, what is it?”
Nezu looked up at me, his small eyes behind his glasses not looking particularly displeased, and I felt relieved.
“I understand you’re busy, but there are various matters regarding the museum’s future operations I’d like to speak with you about, so I was hoping you might be able to spare a little time. …If that suits you, even over lunch would be fine.”
I added that because it was already five minutes before twelve. Nezu had never been late for lunch. He raised his eyebrows.
“Talk? I see… But I have to return to the prefectural office now. There’s a Gender Equality Council meeting first thing this afternoon. I’m running it, so I can’t be late.”
“I see…”
I was disappointed.
“…But I can make time later in the evening.”
“Oh—really?”
Nezu flipped through his planner.
“How about six?”
At this point I couldn’t afford to be picky, so I answered, “That would be fine.”
He closed his planner with a snap and smiled pleasantly.
“Good. Then let’s meet in the lobby on the first floor of the prefectural office.”
“Yes, Nezu-kachō. Thank you in advance.”
I bowed my head.
