Takaya left the museum at the end of March, and a new section chief, Nezu, came in his place. Nezu had been seconded from the Prefectural Office’s Cultural Affairs Division—the Gender Equality Promotion Division in the room next door. He was a middle-aged man nearing forty, with a towering height, his heavy body swaying with flesh, and on top of a thick, boar-like neck was a red face wearing gold-rimmed glasses, the hair slicked down with pomade.
This Nezu became a new source of trouble for me—or rather, for all the curators. He also served as head of the Gender Equality Promotion team, seemed extremely busy, and only came to the museum about half the week. He would arrive well after the scheduled time, sit heavily at his desk, spend about an hour reading two or three newspapers while rocking his large body, and then quickly leave for lunch. Once he left the office, he would not return for hours. All staff were supposed to write their purpose, destination, and return time on the board when going out, but Nezu’s column was always blank. Even when we called his mobile phone, we never once got through, as if it were turned off.
At first, we endured it quietly, thinking things like (he might not be used to the job yet), or (it must be difficult going back and forth between the prefectural office and the museum), but by the time several days had passed after Golden Week, we could no longer quite hide our impatience. It was really about time we got started on preparing exhibition plans for the next fiscal year, and the pile of documents waiting for the section chief’s stamp had already reached its limit. A dedicated document cart sat beside Nezu’s desk, waiting to be looked through, but recently it had become full, and another one had been added.
“Hey, Saki-chan. Say something to Nezu-kachō, will you?”
From the corner of the room, Some-san whispered to me while casting a sideways glance at Nezu at the far end.
“Me…?”
Nezu, who seemed to have a temper, would shout over the smallest things, so everyone avoided speaking to him as much as possible. Just yesterday, a staff member who had served tea had been scolded simply for placing a teacup on top of an open newspaper.
“You’re the senior curator, aren’t you, Saki-chan?”
It was true that as of April first, I had been appointed senior curator. But—
“You’re a senior too, Some-san, aren’t you?”
And you’ve been one for two years now.
“It took me ten years to finally become one. And I’m only part-time.”
“You say that, but you come in every day anyway, don’t you?”
“My daughter’s in junior high now, so I’ve got more time… Well, you’re the hope of our museum—the rising star. And you’ve always been well-liked by the higher-ups, Saki-chan, you know.”
For a moment, I was startled, thinking she might be alluding to my relationship with Takaya, but Some-san’s eyes were direct and full of goodwill, so I felt a measure of relief.
“All right. I’ll try talking to Nezu-kachō.”
When I said that, Some-san smiled and gave my shoulder a light pat.
“As expected! I’m counting on you, Senior Curator Saki!”
I sighed but forced a smile.
