“Yes. Even if you manage to stay at the museum, it’ll likely be even tougher than before. You’re still young. You could go back to university and focus on your research, or you could look for another job. It seems some people are already thinking along those lines.”

I recalled a conversation I had with a friend not long ago. Then I took a breath and answered.

“I’m staying at the museum until I’m transferred. I like being a curator. Some-san feels the same.”

Takaya smiled.

“I’m relieved to hear that.—I’m resigning.”

“What?!”

As I started to protest, Takaya raised a hand to stop me.

“Easy. I’m resigning—so I can come back to this museum.”

“Huh?”

“I’m joining that company—the designated administrator. I’ll be in charge of the museum’s operations.”

I looked up, startled. Takaya nodded.

“That’s right. From here on, I’ll be involved in running this place on the management company’s side.”

“So you’re not leaving the museum.”

Takaya’s voice lifted slightly.

“Of course. I’ve been here for ten years. I care about this place more than any of you do. What we have here doesn’t belong to the prefectural officials. It’s an asset of the people—of Japan. We have a duty to pass it on to future generations. Works of art can be ruined in a single day if even slightly mishandled. It’s not something you can just fix later by throwing money at it. There are things that can be undone and things that cannot. We cannot create beauty, but we can preserve it for a hundred—two hundred years. To protect beauty and make it accessible to as many people as possible—that is what it means to be a curator. The prefectural officials don’t understand that at all. Protect the curators, and you protect the museum itself. But I won’t give up on this place. That’s why I’ve decided to walk away from my position as a prefectural employee and move into the private sector. …Well, my wife wasn’t too happy about it.”

He gave a sly grin.

“From now on, even the director will have to follow my instructions. First, we have to turn around the museum’s deficit, but that won’t be any easy task. To increase revenue under austerity measures, we’ll have to plan extremely carefully. I’m going to work you hard, so be prepared.”

I smiled and replied.

“Yes, Takaya-kachō!”
