“We were already so busy with exhibitions that we barely had any time for our own research as it was. Even so, we still found it rewarding to make the exhibitions a success. From now on, we may spend less time on planning, but more than that, staffing and budgets will be cut. And if people don’t feel needed, they lose motivation.”

Among our colleagues, some were considering returning to university, and others were openly researching study-abroad programs during breaks.

“What will you do, Some-san?”

“Me? At this point, I can’t really go back to university. I’ve got a child, too. Well, I’ll stay at the museum as long as I can. I do feel attached to this place.”

Some-san lowered her voice slightly.

“They say Takaya-kachō is going to be transferred too.”

“No way.”

I was stunned. Takaya was the de facto head of the curatorial department. If he were to leave, it’s no exaggeration to say the museum’s operations would run aground.

When I hurriedly asked, Takaya smiled wryly.

“That rumor is true. I’ve been offered a position as Deputy Director in the Board of Education Secretariat. On paper, it’s a promotion. But it’s probably just part of the museum’s cost-cutting. I’m the second-highest paid after the director.”

“But… if you’re gone, Takaya-kachō, what are we supposed to do?”

“Another section chief will come soon. Probably from somewhere like the Cultural Affairs Division.”

“Someone like that would be useless!”

I found myself raising my voice.

“There are many people who entrust their collections to this museum precisely because it’s you, Takaya-kachō. What are we supposed to tell them? And the handling of the collection, negotiations with other museums—there are so many things that only you can do; no matter how many bureaucrats who know nothing about how a museum actually works come, it won’t solve anything. You know that better than anyone.”

Takaya gazed out the window at the garden facing the river in silence for a while. A few red plum trees in the garden were beginning to bloom here and there. Then he turned back.

“Saki. Let me ask you something—what are you going to do now?”

“Me?”
