There is probably something fundamentally lacking in me, and that is why I am not chosen in the end. I do not know what it is, but it was the same with Naoki too. Even if that had not happened, Ichii would have realized it sooner or later. It is such a pity, but it cannot be helped.
Thinking back, even when I was with Ichii, all I prioritized was not wanting to be hurt any further, and I did not value his heart. A woman like me—self-centered and unable to open up—could never be loved to the end. I don’t even have the confidence to make a man happy.
Still, though I find it odd myself, when I imagine Ichii’s happy family, I feel as if I too am becoming strangely filled. Of course, loneliness and sadness are foremost, but those are already feelings I am completely used to, and so they are easy to endure.
My memories with Ichii are irreplaceable to me, but along with them, my own regret and self-disappointment cling tightly, and so it is still too painful to properly recall them.
Rather than that, it gives me great comfort to think that what I sent out beyond that door at that time was his back heading toward a bright future, and above all, that my not losing myself and trying to stop him was necessary to bring about a happy family. —Perhaps that is my last pride.
Bearing all of it lumped together—things I will never reveal to anyone in my life—I continue to live. That is what I swore to my child, and it is also what Ichii taught me…
The night slowly gives way to dawn.
I watch the light inside and outside blend and become one.
From within that, I try to find strength. The strength to get up, get ready, speak with people, even smile.
It’s all right. I can do it again today. If I cannot even believe that, then there is no meaning in having lived until now.
