トシキ「It's time to call my mom.
You called this morning.
トシキ「I’m supposed to call twice a day, but you have it worse.
シンディ「Well, it’s not really checking in, it’s a quota. My mom doesn't even know what 'worry' means.
アラン「My sister is a psychologist, but she never gives out any comforting counseling.
ジェイク「Haha, she just observes endlessly. If anything, it makes everyone more anxious.
She always asks for data on our emotional states during meals and bathroom breaks.
ジェイク「Does that even mean anything?
シンディ「Yeah, she says it’s all connected.
Are you actually buying into that?
シンディ「I have no choice! I’ve had to live with it. Right, Uncle Allan?
アラン「Well, what I know is that Cindy handles Louise like a pro.
トシキ「Let me put you on speaker. Everyone’s here.
It’s Allan.
How are you?
アラン「Good! We just left Nick and Carol’s place in Colorado.
アラン「Jake’s old friend. The mechanic.
How was it?
アラン「It was nostalgic. He’s much more normal now, completely harmless and doesn't bother anyone. Plus, he fixed the car.
カヨ「What kind of guy is he? Does he usually cause trouble?
He’s just brutally honest with himself.
アラン「Come to think of it, Louise has met Nick before. That was quite something.
What happened?
ジェイク「Nick was doing his usual juggling act at a party, and your mom was just standing there taking notes, furrowing her brow and muttering, ‘Fascinating…’
カヨ「Well, sounds like he's anything but ordinary.
トシキ「Nick was actually a great guy. He fixed the car and taught me a lot.
カヨ「Well, if you say so. Though driving across the country in a car that constantly needs fixing sounds a bit reckless.
ジェイク「That’s the whole point of a road trip, Kayo!
トシキ「We should be in New York in a few days.
カヨ「Be careful, and call us when you get there.
トシキ「Will do.
カヨ「Oh, wait, your dad wants to talk to you too.
健一「How’s it going over there?
トシキ「Having a blast! Everyone’s doing great!
健一「Good to hear. That's a relief.
Long time no, buddy! I hear you’re working on a sitcom!
健一「Good to hear your voice, Allan. Yeah, when I visited the studio with Spieger, they invited me to join.
シンディ「A TV drama? That’s amazing!
健一「Yeah, it’s a whole different world, but I'm having fun.
ジェイク「What’s it about?
健一「It’s about a bar, the staff, and the people who drink there.
ジェイク「A bar sitcom? Like ‘Cheers’?
健一「Something like that, I guess. But I want to make it a lot more chaotic.
I love it, go wild with the story!
シンディ「It sounds so fun! This whole road trip has been total chaos, though, with everyone doing whatever they want.
健一「Well, that sounds like a blast. I'll do my best to make a great show out of it.
カヨ「Kenichi, you have your pitch meeting tomorrow, right?
健一「Yeah, I wonder how it’s going to go.
健一「Hey, did you forget? I wrote the original story for a feature film, and starred in it!
シンディ「Oh right, I totally forgot!
トシキ「It's not my fault, Dad. You have zero aura.
シンディ「I’m so sorry! It’s a legendary film! You were so cool in it!
健一「When you put it that way, it almost sounds like you're dissing me…
アラン「So, what do you actually do in a pitch meeting?
健一「First, we lock down the concept. Character designs, customer types, all the fine details.
シンディ「It sounds so exciting!
健一「Yeah, I am pretty nervous though. Unlike writing solo, this is a team effort, so it’s all new to me.
アラン「You’ll do great, Kenichi. You’re a great writer.
健一「It was great talking to all of you.
トシキ「Yeah, good luck with the meeting tomorrow, Dad!
You guys be careful on the road.
カヨ「Call me again tomorrow, okay?
トシキ「Will do. Tell everyone at the bakery I said hi if you drop by.
カヨ「I will. Love you.
トシキ「Love you too.
シンディ「Hehe, you really are a mama's boy, you know that?
シンディ「Your parents are really sweet.
They worry too much, but… yeah.
アラン「All parents worry about their kids.
ジェイク「Especially when they’re road-tripping in a half-century-old clunker with two old men!
シンディ「Oh, I need to send my update. It’s been 4 hours.
アラン「What are you reporting to her this time?
シンディ「My current emotional data.
What's that even supposed to mean?
シンディ「She has me score everything. Happiness, stress, fatigue, excitement... all on a scale of 1 to 10.
ジェイク「You’re texting numbers to your mom like you're a lab report! That’s way different from Toshiki's family.
シンディ「Well, like I said, it’s not about emotional attachment.
アラン|「Hey, don't say that. She probably just finds peace of mind in the numbers, right?
カヨ「How’s the writing going? Are you managing okay?
健一「It’s tough. The pacing for TV is so fast. You need multiple developments in a single episode, and I’m still figuring out how other writers' minds work.
カヨ「You look like you're having fun, though.
I really am.
カヨ「Good. I’m sure you’ll come up with something amazing.
健一「It’s Phil. The producer.
Good news. We’re having a pitch meeting tomorrow. Can you come?
健一「A pitch meeting?
We’re finalizing the concept for ‘Alcohol Friends.’ I want the writers’ room there. I’ll introduce you to the team.
What time?
Studio B. (午前10時、スタジオBで)」
健一「I’ll be there. See you tomorrow.
カヨ「This is the real deal now, isn't it?
健一「Yeah, they said we’re going to turn those vague ideas we discussed into a solid structure.
カヨ「I hope the team is nice.
健一「That’s the most important part! Besides, it’s my first time doing American TV—a sitcom, no less. It still feels like a dream.
カヨ「But they reached out to you because they recognized your talent. Believe in yourself!
Let’s get started. We’re here to finalize the concept for ‘Alcohol Friends.’
フィル「The setting: a bar. The characters: regulars. The tone: comedy. But we need more. We need a hook that keeps the audience coming back.
サラ「What kind of bar are we looking at? A dive bar? Or something upscale?
フィル「Good question. I’m thinking… working-class. A neighborhood bar where everyone knows each other.
But I want it more modern, more chaotic. A place where anyone can walk in, so you get all sorts of characters.
Do you have a specific image in mind?
フィル「The bartender. He’s the key. Someone who embraces the chaos and is pretty chaotic himself.
健一がノートに「The Bartender = Chaos」と書き込む。
健一「What kind of bartender are we talking about exactly?
フィル「Great question, Kenichi. I’m thinking… philosophical. A guy who dispenses wisdom along with his drinks.
He lives by his own set of rules—about drinking, about life, the whole package. He’s charismatic.
サラ「So, like a ‘bartender guru’?
But with a twist—he’s a bit crazy. He makes bizarre cocktails, mixes things that shouldn't be mixed, and expects people to follow his ‘laws.’
マイケル「We should incorporate flair bartending.
フィル「You know, the showy stuff. Throwing bottles, spinning shakers, catching things behind your back.
デイビッド「Basically juggling with bar tools.
健一「Ah, I see. Like something you’d see online?
It adds visual flair alongside the comedy. Makes the bartender more dynamic—and it’s extra funny when he messes up and drops something.
サラ「So the bartender is the main character?
But the regulars are equally important. They’re the ensemble.
健一「What kind of regulars are we talking about?
A guy who just broke up with his partner, someone struggling at work, a young kid at a crossroads in life... all kinds of lost souls. They all come to the bar to escape.
マイケル「And the bartender gives them advice?
But since it’s a sitcom, who knows if it’s actual advice. Sometimes he makes sense, other times he just hits them with crazy logic and makes things worse.
デイビッド「So it’s a comedy about struggling regulars turning to a crazy bartender for help.
Turning their problems into comedy.
サラが「I like that. Simple and strong.
マイケルも「Yeah, we can mine that for episodes endlessly.
健一「Do we have a name for the bartender?
フィル「Not yet. We need something strong. Memorable.
サラ「What else about his personality? What makes him stand out?
フィル「He’s confident. Arrogant, even. He truly believes his way of life is the only right way.
マイケル「Like a philosopher king. But running a dive bar.
Perfect.
健一が「Philosopher king in a dive bar… I like it.
“Main Bartender”
“Young Apprentice”
フィル「OK. So we have two bartenders. The master and the student.
健一「What about his background? We need to know where he’s coming from.
フィル「He’s been bartending for 30 years. Seen everything, done everything. He thinks he knows it all.
サラ「Does he have a family?
フィル「None. He doesn’t see the need for one. To him, the bar is everything—his home, his friends, his surrogate sons.
Actually, that kind of guy feels surprisingly modern in a weird way.
Almost like he’s living by his own gospel.
マイケル「And the apprentice? What’s his deal?
Early twenties. Fresh out of school, and full of energy. A bit naive, maybe a little delusional about how the world works.
サラ「Like a classic lovable goofball.
His wild ideas and over-the-top mistakes could be a huge highlight of the show.
健一「It’s almost like a dual-protagonist setup.
デイビッド「That’s a classic dynamic. The philosophical master and the goofball student.
We can get endless mileage out of wrong drink orders, romantic misunderstandings, all of it.
マイケル「And the master oscillates between frustration and tough love.
フィル「Right. Since he speaks in grand, philosophical terms, he ends up mentoring the kid through bizarre ‘laws’ of life.
Great session. We have a solid concept.
Names, backstories. Then we start writing.
サラ「When do we start casting?
I want to find the bartender first. He’s the key to the whole show.
マイケル「And the apprentice?
フィル「We’ll hold auditions. I want someone fresh. Young, and full of energy.
Good input today.
健一「Thank you, Phil. Honestly, it finally feels like I’m really part of the team.
フィル「You have a good instinct for character. Keep it up.
健一「I will. Oh, by the way... about the flair bartending. It’s basically juggling with bar tools, right?
Anyone specific come to mind?
健一「Well, I heard a story about someone who’s really good at juggling.
What kind of guy is he?
It’s Kenichi.
Tadokoro! Hi!
健一「I have news. About the sitcom.
What about it?
健一「We finalized the concept. There’s a role. A young bartender. An apprentice.
Young, full of energy, and a bit delusional.
ブレイディ「Wait… that sounds exactly like me!
健一「I thought so too.
ブレイディ「When are auditions?
健一「I don’t know yet. But soon. I’ll tell Phil about you. You’re gonna audition, right?
Thank you! Thank you so much!
健一「Don’t thank me yet. You still have to win the part. But I’ll call you when I know more.
I’ll be ready!
