4-33 “It is important to understand the difference between fairness and equality”
--------------------
> Looking at the social implications of this, it is important to understand the difference
between "fairness" and "equality." It is not a basic instinct of all sentient beings to
seek equality, or to be equal. Indeed, exactly the opposite is true.
>
> The basic instinct of al living things is to express uniqueness, not sameness.
>
> Creating a society in which two beings are truly equal is not only impossible, but
undesirable. Societal mechanisms seeking to produce true equality—in other words,
economic, political, and social "sameness"—work against, not for, the grandest idea
and the highest purpose—which is that each being will have the opportunity to
produce the outcome of its grandest desire, and thus truly re-create itself anew.
>
> Equality of opportunity is what is required for this, not equality in fact. This is called
fairness. Equality in fact, produced by exterior forces and laws, would eliminate, not
produce, fairness. It would eliminate the opportunity for true self-re-creation, which is
the highest goal of enlightened beings everywhere.

The famous motto of the French Revolution—**"Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity"**—has inspired societies around the world for more than two centuries. Yet *Conversations with God* invites us to look more deeply at the distinction between **fairness** and **equality**.
These two concepts are not the same.
**Equality** is the principle that every human being possesses equal worth, regardless of personality, ability, gender, age, race, or any other difference.
**Fairness**, on the other hand, means ensuring that everyone has an equal opportunity to grow, learn, and express their unique gifts by removing unnecessary barriers created by circumstances or discrimination.
Every person is born with a unique individuality. No two human beings are exactly alike.
When equality is interpreted as making everyone the same, individuality can be diminished. Diversity is replaced with uniformity, and the unique expression of each soul is lost.
According to *Conversations with God*, the goal is not to make everyone identical, but to create a world in which every person has a **fair opportunity** to become the fullest expression of who they truly are. True fairness honors our differences while ensuring that everyone has the chance to fulfill their highest potential.
